Pianta topografica di Roma dalla Direzione del Censo
Pianta planimetrica città di Roma, in quattro fogli, murale, realizzata dalla Direzione del Censo sulla base delle mappe del catasto urbano ordinato da Pio VII nel 1818 ed eseguite tra il 1819 e il 1824. L'incisione venne realizzata e pubblicata per ordine del Cardinale Cesare Guerrieri, primo presidente della Congregazione dei Catasti, la quale, istituita il 6 luglio 1816, nel 1822 assumerà la denominazione di Congregazione del Censo.Si tratta della prima edizione della mappa del Censo a cui seguiranno altre due edizioni, l'una nel 1854 e l'ultima nel 1866. Gli edifici sono campiti a tratteggio, mentre le chiese ed i monumenti principali sono rappresentate con la pianta interna. L'orografia è chiaramente leggibile così come il disegno del verde. Sulla sinistra trova un ampio spazio con indice dei luoghi e monumenti su sei colonne, mentre sulla destra si trova l'elenco dei rioni della città: Monti, Trevi, Colonna, Campo Marzo, Ponte, Parione, Regola, S. Eustachio, Pigna, Campitelli, S. Angelo, Ripa, Trastevere e Borgo. Le scale grafiche sono " Scala di Metri 800 nella proporzione di 1 a 4000" (pari a mm ) e "Scala di Palmi Romani 3000 nella proporzione di 1 a 4000" (pari a mm )."Il catasto dello Stato pontificio fu ordinato da Pio VII con il motu proprio...emanato il 6 luglio 1816 per la riforma generale della pubblica amministrazione e dei Tribunali dello Stato pontificio al quale seguirono: a) Il Regolamento del 22 febbraio 1817, emanato dalla Congregazione dei Catasti, sulle misure metrico decimali da adottare per i rilevamenti; b) il motu proprio del 10 dicembre 1818 con cui venne ordinato il succitato catasto urbano di Roma; c) il chirografo dell'8 gennaio 1819 con legge per la conservazione dei catasti; d) il motu proprio Manifestammo del 3 marzo 1819 con norme per l'estimo dei beni, seguito dal Regolamento del 20 marzo successivo per l'estimo dei beni e le norme per la compilazione delle mappe, firmato da C. Guerrieri, presidente della Congregazione dei Catasti; e) il Regolamento dell'11 luglio 1823 della Congregazione del Censo con nuove istruzioni per l'estimo. Gli estimi dei fondi furono eseguiti dal 1825 al 1827, dal 1831 al 1833 si presero in considerazione i reclami e l'11 luglio 1835 fu pubblicato un Regolamento generale per la revisione dell'estimo rustico dello Stato; il 1 novembre dello stesso anno andò finalmente in vigore il nuovo catasto" (Frutaz 162), detto detto poi gregoriano perchè entrò in vigore sotto Grregorio XVI. The assembled prelates met in the Lateran Basilica to review and revise the rules and laws regulating the clergy in and of the province producing revisions that were numerous and important. These were promulgated promptly and published in several editions in 1725. This is one of three editions we have identified as being printed in that year all from the press of the same printer. No priority has yet been established for their order of appearance. Contemporary vellum over light pasteboards with slightly raised bands; the vellum used here was recovered from earlier use in a binding or some document. 8vo, broché, Le texte des Origines ne nous est malheureusement pas parvenu : nous n'en connaissons que des fragments de longueur très inégale, transmis par les testimonia, notamment ceux de Cornélius Nepos. Ces fragments sont cependant suffisamment abondants pour que l'on puisse reconstituer la trame générale de l'oeuvre, probablement divisée en deux parties : les deux premiers livres traitaient de la période de la période royale de Rome et des principales villes italiennes, tandis que la fin de l'ouvrage était consacrée à l'histoire contemporaine ou proche de Caton. D'un style très varié, ces Origines relatent tout autant la fondation de Troie, que la fréquence des éclipses lunaires et solaires ou encore les produits utilisés par les femmes pour éclaircir leurs cheveux. Notre édition regroupe les fragments des sept livres et les fragments des livres non identifiables. L'introduction fait le point sur les différentes hypothèses relatives à la datation du livre et au crédit à accorder aux différents testimonia. Une analyse des sources, complexes, permet de discerner quatre grandes orientations, la littérature latine, les sources grecques, les histoires locales et l'expérience personnelle de Caton. L'histoire du texte est longuement analysée, tandis que le choix et l'ordre des fragments sont rigoureusement justifiés. Des notes accompagnent la lecture et sont développées, en fin d'ouvrage, par des notes complémentaires. L'édition est en outre enrichie d'un tableau de concordance, d'un Index Testimoniorum ainsi que d'un Index Nominum, en latin et en grec.

Caius Valerius Catullus (Ca. 84-54 B.C.), Roman poet, born in Verona, of a well-to-do family. He went to Rome (62 B.C.) where he fell deeply in love, probably with Clodia, sister of Cicero's opponent Publ us Clodius. She was suspected of murdering her husband. Catullus wrote to his beloved, addressed as Lesbia (to recall Sappho of Lesbos), a series of superb little poems that run from early passion and tenderness to the hatred and disillusionment that overwhelmed him after his mistress was faithless. His works include, besides the Lesbia poems, poems to his young friend Juventius; epigrams, ranging from the genial to the obscenely derisive; elegies; a few long poems, notably "Attis" and a nuptial poem honoring Thetis and Peleus; and various short pieces. His satire is vigorous and flexible, his light poems joyful and full-bodied. He was influenced by the Alexandrians and drew much on the Greeks for form and meter, but his genius outran all models. Catullus is one of the greatest lyric poet s of all time. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo.
