AFTER THE PAST Essays in Ancient History in Honour of H. W. Pleket
Small bump to foreedge of front cover. Faint bump to base of spine. ; Mnemosyne , Vol Suppl. 233; 378 pages; What was funny about ancient jokes, and why? Why did the Roman state legislate to curb the behaviour of its obscenely rich and powerful elite, if it never really expected such laws to be obeyed? Why did it oppress the poor, and lavish public child support on them? These are important questions, but ancient Greeks and Romans could never have thought of them. They never questioned the right of the rich to be rich. They could not improve their understanding of Homeric gift-giving with the experience of ritualized friendship among the Trobriand islanders. Such questions and such answers can only come from those who live after the ancient past. This volume honours the well-known Dutch epigraphist and ancient historian H. W. Pleket. Ten substantial essays reflect his wide range, from early Greece to the Roman Empire, and his taste for comparative economic and social history.

QUINTUS SERTORIUS AND THE LEGACY OF SULLA
Former owner's bookplate to ffep. Faint rounding to upper corners. Minor creasing to DJ. ; When people think of the great generals of the Late Roman Republic, most think of Pompey The Great and Julius Caesar but there were other more obscure men who were just as great in their military prowess such as Lucullus. Another one of those men was Quintus Sertorius, the last Marian general who successfully repelled every commander sent against him in Spain for almost 12 years. Phillip Spann does a great job at bringing this facinating character out of obscurity: recounting his exploits and exploring what his true motives may have been. ; 239 pages

ROMAN BUILDING Materials and Techniques
Minor shelfwear. Minor bumping to 1 corner. Faint foxing. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.18 x 10.79 x 8.5 Inches; 360 pages; Roman architecture is extraordinarily rich, both in terms of the techniques and materials used and in the variety of buildings constructed, many of which are still visible today. Roman Buildings places emphasis on the technical aspects of that architecture, following the process of building through each stage, from quarry to standing wall, from tree to roof timbers. The author examines the different techniques involved in building in brick and in stone and wood, and how these materials were obtained or manufactured. He also discusses interior decoration and looks at the practical aspects of water supply, heating and roads. Each type of building required special tools and these are described, using both surviving examples and modern parallels. The Romans constructed many spectacular feats of engineering, producing magnificent monuments such as the Pantheon and Pont du Gard. This book looks at these large-scale public buildings but also at more modest homes and shops. The result is a thorough and systematic examination of Roman building, with over 750 illustrations, including the author's own drawings. Roman Buildings contains a foreword by Professor Michael Fulford.
