‎Gruen, Erich S.‎

‎Diaspora: Jews amidst Greeks and Romans‎

‎What was life like for Jews settled throughout the Mediterranean world of Classical antiquity--and what place did Jewish communities have in the diverse civilization dominated by Greeks and Romans? In a probing account of the Jewish diaspora in the four centuries from Alexander the Great's conquest of the Near East to the Roman destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 C.E., Erich Gruen reaches often surprising conclusions. By the first century of our era, Jews living abroad far outnumbered those living in Palestine and had done so for generations. Substantial Jewish communities were found throughout the Greek mainland and Aegean islands, Asia Minor, the Tigris-Euphrates valley, Egypt, and Italy. Focusing especially on Alexandria, Greek cities in Asia Minor, and Rome, Gruen explores the lives of these Jews: the obstacles they encountered, the institutions they established, and their strategies for adjustment. He also delves into Jewish writing in this period, teasing out how Jews in the diaspora saw themselves. There emerges a picture of a Jewish minority that was at home in Greco-Roman cities: subject to only sporadic harassment; its intellectuals immersed in Greco-Roman culture while refashioning it for their own purposes; exhibiting little sign of insecurity in an alien society; and demonstrating both a respect for the Holy Land and a commitment to the local community and Gentile government. Gruen's innovative analysis of the historical and literary record alters our understanding of the way this vibrant minority culture engaged with the dominant Classical civilization. 386p. bibliography. index Book‎

‎Vivante, Bella‎

‎Daughters of Gaia: Women in the Ancient Mediterranean World‎

‎The experiences of women in ancient cultures were certainly very difficult from those of most women today. Yet a tendency to focus too much on the restrictions early Western women faced has until now provided readers with an incomplete picture. In Daughters of Gaia, Bella Vivante explores womens lives in four ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean: Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome. Looking at this era with a women-centered perspective, Vivante highlights womens agency and explains the social, political, and cultural factors that fostered female empowerment. Beginning with powerful images of goddesses and womens roles in the religious sphere, Vivante lays the foundation for womens activities in other social realms--Health, economica, governance, war, philosophy, and poetry. By examining the similarities and differences among the four Mediterranean civilizations, she offers a deeper understanding of the lives of women in each. Drawing on her extended contact with Native American peoples and her knowledge of Native concepts of womens identities, Vivante applies new models for viewing womens roles in the ancient world.232p.Illus. bibliography.indxx Book‎

‎Greek and Roman slavery‎

‎There has not been any previous collection of relevant ancient sources in a form suitable for students or specialists in disciplines such as Modern or Social and Economic History unfamiliar with the classical languages - indeed, there does not even exist such a collection for specialists in Classics. -- This selection provides readers interested in ancient slavery with translations in contemporary English of those major texts from Greek and Latin literature to which modern scholarship constantly refers, as well as a small sample of the epigraphical and other non-literary material. -- Cross-references, Bibliography, and a detailed Index are provided to make it particularly suitable for use by School and University classes. Although it is intended as a supplement and not a substitute for a systematic treatment of the subject, and the author s interpretative comment is kept to a minimum, the material is arranged with introductions bringing out the significance of each of the chosen passages. 283p, map incdex Book‎

‎Family Favourites‎

‎This is the story of Elagabalus, named after the Syrian Sun god and sky-stone. At thirteen years he led his army victoriously against the might of the Emperor of Rome. He was a god-like young man: strong, beautiful, charming, and beloved of his soldiers. Once established as Emperor though, his family sought to influence him, but he rejected them, and they, like the Senate, became his deadly enemies. Through the story of this unusual and outrageous man we see the background of third century AD Roman Empire - the power of family and dynastic ties, and the struggle between autocratic ruler and his advisers. ‎Nero, Emperor in Revolt‎

‎This biography of Nero penetrates the mists of ancient myth and fantasy, and paints a balanced picture of Nero, man and emperor. Ruler of the gigantic Roman Empire at a time of great material and cultural splendour, he refused to fit into the traditional mould. Preferring Greek custom to Roman, he was an enlightened patron of the visual arts and passionately fond of athletics, music and the theatre. It was unprecedented for a ruler to attach more importance to his role as artist than to affairs of state. And this, inevitably, contributed to Nero's downfall -- but not for fourteen years. Meanwhile, whenever he was frightened for his own safety, he murdered. But the vast majority of the peoples of the Empire remained unaffected by his acts of violence, and in some areas he was acclaimed for the good sense of his government. 271p. illus. decorated end papers Book‎
