Originally published folded into paper wrappers with front cover of wrapper present but detached. Splits along fold lines tiny paper loss at a couple of fold intersections now minimised. Very good condition. Beautifully rendered bird's eye view of late nineteenth century Rome enclosed within city walls in the foreground and background. The Basilica of St. Peter's and the Vatican are at the right edge. Along the top edge are numbers 1 to 5 and letters A -D along the sides; these may be used as references to the detailed lists of buildings noted along the lower edge. . unknown

This impressive engraving by Luigi Rossini 1790-1857 is from the Le Antichita Romane series depicting the antiquities of Rome and environs. Carrying on the tradition of Giovanni Battista Piranesi 1720-1778 and himself an architect Rossini's prints celebrated the Classical Tradition and appealed to the well-to-do tourists on the Grand Tour and to architects and designers. The engravings powerfully evoke the glories of Ancient Rome while also providing the modern viewer with glimpses of this magnificent city in the early 19th century. . unknown
