‎Voyage en Italie.. 1768. Deuxième volume‎

‎Notre manuscrit documente la seconde partie d'un tour en Italie, laquelle se déroula du 19 octobre 1768 au 26 mai 1769, selon l'itinéraire suivant :I. Route de Florence à Rome par Lorette (ff. 1-17). - II. Route de Rome à Naples (ff. 18-22). - III. Naples (ff. 22-54). - IV. Route de Naples à Rome (ff. 55-56). - V. Rome (ff. 57-145). - VI. Route de Rome à Livourne (ff. 146-153). - VII. Livourne (ff. 154-156). - VIII. Pise (ff. 157-160). - IX. Lucques (ff. 160-162). - X. Gênes (ff. 163-171). - XI. Route de Gênes à Antibes et à Marseille (ff. 172-175). La graphie n'étant pas toujours régulière, il présente certaines difficultés de lecture pour quelques vocables.Le début du texte permet de fixer exactement l'époque du périple : "Beaucoup de personnes nous querellèrent de ce que nous n'attendions pas à Florence l'arrivée de l'Empereur qui devoit accompagner en novembre l'archiduchesse Reine de Naples. Comptant nous trouver à Rome pour les fêtes que l'on préparoit à l'Empereur, et à Naples pour celles que l'on devoit faire à l'occasion du mariage du monarque, nous avions pris note parti de renoncer à celles de Florence". Il s'agit en effet des festivités célébrées dans les différentes cours de la Péninsule pour le mariage de Marie-Caroline d'Autriche (une des filles de Marie-Thérèse) avec Ferdinand IV de Naples, qui avait eu lieu par procuration le 12 mai 1768, avant l'acheminement de la princesse dans ses nouveaux États. 1. De Florence à Rome. Les étapes de nos voyageurs sont bien fixées et classiques : Imola, Faenza, Ravenne, Forli, Césène, Savignano, Rimini, Fano, Senigaglia, Ancône, Lorette (longue description), Macerata, Tolentino, Foligno, Spolète, Terni, Città Castellana. Chacune de ces localités a droit à une description sommaire, et parfois à une anecdote se déroulant en son sein (procès à Imola, vente de vin à Forli, évidemment le pèlerinage à Lorette, les fêtes des Apennins, cascade des Marmore, etc.). Le rédacteur est bien un "Aufklärer" en tout cas, comme en témoignent ses réflexions sur les dévotions à Lorette : "À la vérité, les pèlerins donnent dans des enfantillages en faisant un certain nombre de fois le tour de la Santa Casa sur leurs genoux à nud ; mais ils sont moins blâmables que les gens instruits à la tête de la maison qui en dépend, lesquelles doivent entretenir la foy et la dévotion par de bonnes exhortations, et non en autorisant des pratiques purement extérieures".Le premier séjour romain des voyageurs ne dura que douze jours, à l'issue desquels ils voulurent profiter de la clémence de l'arrière-saison pour gagner Naples.2. De Rome à Naples. Ils passèrent donc par Frascati, et les villas Tuscolane, par le monastère du Mont-Cassin, par Capoue et Caserte. Suit la première partie principale du manuscrit, consistant en la description de Naples, méthodiquement explorée selon deux axes (d'une part, les églises, palais et autres monuments ; d'autre part, "les antiquités et les curiosités naturelles"). Les églises sont ma foi la chose la plus commune à Naples, et notre rédacteur d'égrener les visites, sans pourvoir prétendre à l'exhaustivité (plus de 500 bâtiments consacrés au culte dès l'époque baroque) : Duomo San Gennaro, Saint-Philippe-de-Néri, Saint-Laurent, Saint-François-Xavier, le Saint-Esprit, Sainte-Marie des Âmes du Purgatoire, San Paolo Maggiore, Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste, les Saints-Apôtres, San Giovanni a Carbonara, le Gesù Nuovo (à propos duquel est annexée une longue relation de l'expulsion des Jésuites le 19 novembre 1767), Santa Chiara, Il Carmine [Santa Maria del Carmine Maggiore], L'Ascension, etc. Ici, comme cela vaudra plus tard pour les sanctuaires de Rome (cf. infra), et conformément au goût de l'époque, ce sont les tableaux exposés dans les chapelles, absides, ou sacristies, qui retiennent le plus l'attention du narrateur.Suivent les palazzi (du moins une partie) : Palais royal, Palazzo della Torre, Palazzo della Rocca, Palazzo Francavilla, etc. ; puis les monuments des environs : Chartreuse San Martino, le Château Saint-Elme, le "Tombeau de Virgile", Pouzzoles, les localités du Golfe, le Lac d'Agnano (drainé en 1870), le Vésuve (avec une relation de l'éruption des 19-20 octobre 1767, la plus récente alors enregistrée).Mention obligatoire en cette seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle : les sites d'Herculanum ("l'ancienne Herculée") et de Pompéi occupent les ff. 48-49. Enfin, le récit se termine par la présentation (des plus sommaires) des visiteurs à la Cour de Naples : "Le Roy habitait Portici quand nous eûmes l'honneur de luy être présenté le 3 de décembre par M. de Choisieul [sic] notre ambassadeur [= Renaud-César de Choiseul-Praslin, 1739-1791]. Nous nous [?] avec deux abbés de condition, Lorrains, en face de la table où le Roy dînoit. Sa grande occupation fut de nous examiner les uns après les autres pendant plus d'une demi-heure : en sortant de table, au lieu d'entrer tout de suite dans son appartement, il se détourna à gauche, nous fit une légère inclination de tête sans nous parler et rentra sur le champ. L'on nous avoit prévenus que c'étoit la manière dont il recevoit les étrangers ..."3. De Naples à Rome. "Voulant revenir à Rome avant les grandes pluies, nous quittâmes munis de passeports Naples le 13 de décembre, enchantés de la beauté du climat. Nous prîmes la route de la poste". Elle les mena de Fondi à Velletri à travers la zone de ce qui était alors les fameux Marais Pontins (Agro Pontino). Ce n'est qu'à l'occasion de ce second séjour que le rédacteur donne une description détaillée de la ville de Rome. Il commence évidemment par les églises, qu'il chiffre à 330 ("en tout, y compris les couvents, hôpitaux et les chapelles"), ce qui semble très sous-estimé (il en existe plus de 900 aujourd'hui, et, même en retranchant les constructions du XIXe et du XXe siècle, on est loin du compte). En tout cas, le paradoxe de la situation est bien posé : "Ce nombre prodigieux de lieux saints, continuellement ouverts, beaucoup trop considérable pour le peu d'habitants, est la cause que l'on ne voit jamais que très peu de personnes dans les temples. Saint-Pierre même, où la majesté divine réside dans le sanctuaire le plus attirant, réunit à peine cent personnes à la fois dans le temps des offices." Ceci dit, il commence sa description par Saint-Pierre évidemment (ff. 60-65), continue par les palais du Vatican et le Château Saint-Ange (ff. 65-69), puis détaille un certain nombre de sanctuaires et de monuments remarquables. Les dernières pages sont consacrées aux environs immédiats de la ville (Tivoli, Este, Albano, Castello [= Castel Gandolfo], l'abbaye de Grottaferrata).Enfin, cette partie se termine par des réflexions générales sur le gouvernement de l'État romain, le style de vie des cardinaux, de la noblesse romaine, et de la bonne bourgeoisie,le genre d'occupations des Romains (les théâtres, les opéras, une description du Carnaval, passage obligé, se trouve à la fin).Comme à Naples, les voyageurs furent officiellement présentés au pape le 27 décembre 1769. Le Souverain Pontife était alors le célèbre Clément XIV Ganganelli, qui venait juste d'être élu le 18 mai précédent, et devait se signaler par l'immortel bref Dominus ac Redemptor. Voici le détail de l'audience pontificale : "Nous fûmes présentés avec deux abbés lorrains par monsieur le chevalier de Laparelli, Florentin, maître de chambre de l'ambassade de France. Notre introducteur garda son épée ; nous autres, nous la quittâmes ; nous fîmes les trois génuflexions d'usage, et arrivés aux pieds de Sa Sainteté qui étoit assise à un bureau couvert d'un dais, nous baisâmes successivement une croix d'or brodée sur sa mule de velours rouge. Le pape, sans avoir l'air de faire attention à cet acte d'humilité auquel sont soumis tous ceux qui veulent luy parler, nous entretenoit de diverses choses relatives à notre voyage. Nous restâmes debout pendant un demi quart-d'heure. Il nous combla de bénédictions pour nous et notre famille (...). Nous le quittâmes en baisant sa mule une seconde fois, et nous nous retirâmes en arrière, en faisant encore les trois génuflexions". C'est en somme moins sommaire que le protocole expéditif de Ferdinand IV. 4. Voyage de retour.Il s'effectua à partir du 11 avril, soit après les cérémonies de la Semaine sainte (longuement décrites à la fin de la partie précédente), et passa par Ronciglione, Caprarola, Viterbe, Montefiascone, Aquapendente, San Quirico, Sienne (où les voyageurs s'attardèrent davantage, ff. 149-154), Livourne (ff. 154-156), Pise (ff. 156-160), Lucques (ff. 160-162). De Livourne, on abandonna la voie de terre pour s'embarquer en direction de Gênes (ff. 163-172), puis de Gênes à Antibes (2 mai), port-frontière entre le comté de Nice et la France (en passant, une brève description de Monaco). À partir d'Antibes, le voyage s'effectue de nouveau par voie de terre (Fréjus, Marseille, Aix, Orange, Montélimar, Valence, Vienne, Lyon, et Paris, rejoint le 26 mai au soir).En conclusion, "Notre voyage a été des plus heureux ; nous n'avons désiré de le voir achevé que pour goûter la douce satisfaction de revoir nos parents, nos bons amis et nos connaissances".
