Ruth Florence, lyrics; Johnny Noble and King Kalakaua, music
I’ll Come Sailing Home to You. Hawaii; King Kalakaua
<p>Honolulu T.H.: Johnny Noble 1930. 4pp. Sheet Music. 12 x 9 inches. Bifolium. Half tone cover illustration from a photograph. Lyrics in English. Music is for both piano and ukulele. Near Fine.</p> <p>Sheet music for Ruth Florence’s I’ll Come Sailing Home to You with music for piano and ukulele by King Kalakaua and Johnny Noble both honorees of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. On the final page of the sheet music are two additional songs with lyrics in Hawaiian: Lei Ohi a Hawaiian hula and Heeia an ancient Hawaiian hula.</p> <p>Published in Honolulu Territory of Hawaii by Noble’s own company the cover of the sheet music shows him with his Moana Hotel Orchestra. Born in Honolulu and trained as a musician composer and arranger Noble 1892–1944 developed the hapa haole style of Hawaiian music and was instrumental in popularizing Hawaiian music in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s.</p> <p>The musical composition is co-credited to Noble and to Hawaii’s King Kalakaua David Kalakaua 1836–1891. During King Kalakaua’s reign from 1874–1891 Hawaiian culture was actively promoted especially music and in particular the use of the ukulele. It seems possible that Noble may have based the music here on an earlier composition by King Kalakaua or attributed to him. King Kalakaua was himself a proficient ukulele player often playing for guests accompanied by his personal musical group Kalakaua’s Singing Boys.</p> <p>Note: The sheet music is accompanied by a modern greeting card reproducing an old photograph of King Kalakaua and his friend author Robert Louis Stevenson.</p> unknown

Ryerson Florence and Alice DG. Miller D. G.
Little Scandal: A Comedy in Three Acts
New York/Hollywood: Samuel French. Near Fine in Very Good dj. c.1951. First Edition. Hardcover. nice tight clean book minimal shelfwear only; jacket a little age-toned at edges and spine but still quite good-looking. B&W photographs Two veteran screenwriters both of whom earned their chops during the silent-film days teamed up for this "up-to-the-minute laughter-provoking comedy" about a young secretary for a United Nations commission who "returns to her small-town home with a just-born baby and a not-too-convincing story of how she happens to have him on her hands." Many farcical complications ensue. Ms. Ryerson 1892-1965 came to the movies in the mid-1920s after having already established herself as a journalist and writer of short fiction; she often wrote in collaboration with her second husband Colin Clements who she married in 1927. They co-authored numerous plays including three that made it to Broadway in the 1940s and several mystery novels and Ryerson herself had quite a decent string of movie credits including as one of the three credited screenwriters on THE WIZARD OF OZ. Ms. Miller 1894-1985 was most active as a scenarist during the 1920s with just a handful of credits after that. "Little Scandal" had its debut and perhaps its biggest success at the Pasadena Playhouse in December 1950; the two count 'em photos that illustrate the book are presumably from that production which had absolutely nobody in it you've ever heard of with the possible exception of Madge Blake a character actress who popped up all over the place on American TV in the 1950s and 1960s. . June Mad: A Comedy in Three Acts
New York/Los Angeles/Toronto: Samuel French. Very Good. c.1939. First Edition. Softcover. good sound copy some wear and age-browning along spine tiny ink mark on front cover light external soiling; text is clean and unmarked. B&W photo frontispiece This play about teenage puppy-love was "suggested by" this husband-and-wife writing team's novel "This Awful Age" published in 1930. The play was staged in Hollywood in February 1939; the Los Angeles Times critic praised its "unusually witty" dialogue and described it was "a turbulent hullabaloo of youth indulging in every phase of the coming-of-age event in which there's certainly never a dull moment." A prospective Broadway production was teased in the press but never came to be; it did however serve as the source even though Ryerson and Clements only got a "story by" credit for the 1941 Columbia film HER FIRST BEAU starring Jane Withers and Jackie Cooper. . Mild Oats
New York/London: D. Appleton and Company. Very Good in Good dj. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. solid copy minor shelfwear tiny stain on top edge of text block; jacket has shallow chipping along top edge and at base of spine spine heavily soiled front and rear panels a little less so. Light-hearted Booth Tarkingtonesque novel about a teenage Everygirl one Jane Jones who we meet "in the throes of adolescence" and subsequently "struggle through her great crushes and follow her ambitions to become alternately a poet a peeress and an actress." Ryerson 1892-1965 came to the movies in the mid-1920s after having already established herself as a journalist and writer of short fiction; she often wrote in collaboration with Clements her second husband to whom she was married from 1927 until his death in 1948. They co-authored numerous plays including three that made it to Broadway in the 1940s and several mystery novels and Ryerson herself had quite a decent string of movie credits including as one of the three credited screenwriters on THE WIZARD OF OZ. This was actually the second novel the duo had written about young Jane and her best pal C following "This Awful Age" published in 1930. A proposed film version of "Mild Oats" was rumored in early 1934 and although it never came to pass the earlier book did finally make it to the screen in 1941 as HER FIRST BEAU but not without having first been repurposed as a stage play called "June Mad." . RYERSON Florence 1892 1965 WIZARD OF OZ
Type letter signed T.L.S. "Florence Ryerson Clements
1948. fine. Very scarce T.L.S "Florence Ryerson Clements" 4to. 1 page Los Angeles October 15th 1948 to her literary agent concerning the licensing of her plays in small part: "We have an offer of $500 for the Bedfellows and I was at first inclined to refuse. Quoted what you said about Harriet. They agreed with you about Harriet but wanted to do the broadcast of Bedfellows because they thought it would help it from the exploitation angle. They have I understand some scheme in mind for having a thirty-day limit on the broadcast and then getting the film. I suppose. to show to theatre managers ahead of the road show." Boldly signed and in excellent condition. From the archive and papers of Samuel French & Son's.<br/><br/> RYERSON Florence 1892 - 2013 1965 American playwright best remembered as the co-author of the screenplay for the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz. Her contributions were numerous including the creation of the multi-roles of actor Frank Morgan who played the Wizard and Ryerson's invented character Mr. Marvel. She also focused the story almost entirely on Dorothy's desire to return home and the Wicked Witch's desire to possess the Ruby Red Slippers. It was her script that introduced the blatant "There's No Place like Home" motif to the film: In order to return to Kansas Dorothy must click the Ruby Red Slippers together and say three times; "There's No Place Like Home". It was also her idea that Dorothy first melted the Wicked Witch by accident because the witch was attempting to set fire to the Scarecrow an idea that preserved Dorothy's purity of motive.<br/><br/> unknown books

Ryerson, Florence, and Colin Clements
Strange Bedfellows; a comedy in three acts SIGNED with notable provenance
New York/Hollywood/Toronto: Samuel French Inc. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1948 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. a good sound copy with only light shelfwear large library label on front pastedown see Notes; the jacket has a bit of paper loss at the spine ends which has been filled in by internal paper-tape reinforcement as have a diagonal tear and a small narrow chip at the bottom of the front panel and another bit at the top rear flap-fold. B&W photo frontispiece INSCRIBED and SIGNED by co-writer Ryerson on the front endpaper to a fellow writer Alice D.G. Miller: "For Alice / with gratitude / and affection / Florence / November 1948." As blurbed on the front of the jacket the play a battle-of-the-sexes comedy set in 1896 San Francisco about a couple who agree to disagree on an important issue women's suffrage had a successful 7-month run on Broadway 229 performances January-July 1948. In addition to the inscription the material on the facing page the front pastedown fills in the story a bit more: first there is the inscribee's ownership signature her full name at the top of the page and there is also a large illustrated bookplate headed Motion Picture Relief Fund Inc. and stating that "This book has been donated to the Motion Picture Country House by Alice D.G. Miller." Miller 1894-1985 was a prominent movie scenarist during the 1920s with a few more scattered credits in the early talkie years; Ryerson 1892-1965 was more prolific who had dozens of screenwriting credits from the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s including a shared credit on THE WIZARD OF OZ and often wrote in collaboration with Clements her second husband. Their joint output included not only screenplays but also mystery novels and stage plays. Beyond documenting a simple friendship though the two women collaborated on at least one stage play a 1950 comedy called "Little Scandal" a copy of which can also be procured from ReadInk if you are interested and so inclined. It might also be noted that Mr. Clements having died of a heart attack in January 1948 never got to enjoy the Broadway success of this play. Signed by One Author . Samuel French, Inc. hardcover
