Kenya Mist
London: Butterworth 1939. 288pp. VG in VG dust-jacket. Romantic white settler fiction set in the Kenya of the early 20's and a best-seller in its day this is the 11th impression in six years. An example of the "Kenya novel" a sub-genre of romance fiction which was popularized mainly by Florence Riddell & Nora St. John Beale as well as Nora K. Strange and Elspeth Huxley. The Kenya novel is credited by C J.D. Duder "Love and the Lions: The Image of White Settlement in Kenya in Popular Fiction 1919-1939" in "African Affairs" 1991 with being a key element in formulating a favorable image of the white settler situation in Kenya with the British and American reading public. According to Duder both Riddell & Nora K. Strange another leading exponent of the genre were "white supremacists with an added tinge of anti-semitism and admiration for Mussolini's version of fascism. Their novels reek of unapologetic racism . " Probably no surprise as this was the nineten-twenties and thirties.and racism was common in southern and east Africa as well as the United States and Europe. SB10. 11th. Imp. Very Good/Very Good. RIMMINGTON Florence M.; FINCK Herman:
ARTS AND CRAFTS BOOKPLATE WITH ORIGINAL COPPER PRINTING PLATE
c.1910. Proof bookplate with original etched copper printing plate by the Birmingham School Arts and Crafts jeweller modellist and medalist Florence M. Rimmington desgined for the composer Herman Finck. The bookplate signed in pencil 'Florence M. Rimmington Sculp.' Presented in its original bespoke crushed green morocco case decorated in gilt and opened with a brass push-button contained within a chamois leather protective pouch with ties. The printed bookplate is housed in a green velvet mount opposite the etched copper plate removable for use in reprinting the bookplate with a green silk cushion separating the two. Also included is a pen and ink design for another bookplate for Finck probably also by Rimmington depicting a classically dressed maiden playing a lyre on a balcony. The printed bookplate the etched copper plate i.e. the original artwork itself and the drawing are all in fine condition. The case and pouch have a little wear but are otherwise in very good order. Florence Rimmington flourished during the first two decades of the twentieth century most notably producing fine Arts and Crafts jewellery silver and metalware and exhibiting at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1905. This commission for the musician and composer Herman Finck creator of the first ever recorded album of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite 1909 and conductor of the first London stage production of Show Boat 1928 starring Paul Robeson forms a wonderful example of her skills as an Arts and Crafts designer and metalworker. A very attractive group beautifully presented and in extraordinarily good condition. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. c.1910 hardcover
