Included are a title page a table of contents twelve leaves with a mixture of verse and prose apercus by Cowper Marcus Aurelius Maeterlinck Chesterton Jefferies and a few lesser known writers then three leaves with borders but blanks within. These borders stand out for their variety and the panache of their execution. While a few may owe a debt to work done before such as that by Beardsley or Parrish Ms. Harper also seems to anticipate high Art Deco style and even later aesthetics than that. Ms. Harper mixes cleverly the geometric the abstract the figurative the natural. The pleasure to be derived from these borders is that from miniatures -- splashy color plates these are not! Further there is nothing corny sentimental or pedestrian about the illustrations which usher us into the little worlds of Ms. Harper's imagination. The text is also hand-written and while not calligraphic it is uniform neat and attractive. <br /><br /> books

<p>New York: Henry Holt and Company 1923 First edition inscribed by the author with her signaiture. In this memoir Florence Jaffray Harriman née Hurst 1870 – 1967 narrates her involvement in the suffragist movement the New York social scene and her frontline observations of both World War I and the Mexican Revolution. Chapter five of the book discusses the Colony Club New York's first woman-only private social club which Harriman co-founded in 1903. Much of Harriman's activism at the time was focused on improving conditions in New York factories and tenements and she eventually broadened the scope of her activism to farmworker rights in Texas—which put her on the bank of the Rio Grande during the Mexican Revolution in 1915. During World War I Harriman worked with Eleanor Roosevelt and the Red Cross and served as the chair of the National Defense Advisory Commission's Committee on Women in Industry from 1917 to 1919. The memoir ends shortly after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment: Harriman closes the book with chapters on her organizing with women voters and the postwar peace movement. . Publisher's green cloth titled in gilt. Binding is bright and clean. . Octavo. With twenty-six plates including frontisportrait of the author. Splitting to endpapers at gutter. Contemporary bookseller's ticket to lower pastedown. A very good fresh copy inscribed by the author "with affectionate admiration." Though the scope of this memoir ends in the early 1920s Harriman's political career flourished for several more decades. During World War II she served as the minister to Norway where she organized evacuation efforts for American citizens and members of the Norwegian government under the 1940 Nazi invasion. She is credited with safely evacuating Crown Princess Märtha and her three children. She published her account of the events in Mission to the North 1941. In 1944 Harriman wrote the foreword for the first English-language edition of Natalia Zarembina's Oswiecim Camp of Death one of the first publications on the Holocaust available in English.</p> Henry Holt and Company, hardcover

Light scattered foxing to first and final leaves with a few spots within but generally clean and bright. Near-fine. Florence Harrison 1877-1955 was a prolific Australian illustrator working in both Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite styles. Tailpiece illustration by Harrison from the Blackie edition of Tennyson's "Guinevere and Other Poems" from poem "Edward Gray". Florence Susan Harrison 1877-1955 the British artist attended the Glasgow School of Art where she developed her distinctive style and gained notoriety as one of the Glasgow Girls. She illustrated the works of Tennyson Christina Rosetti and William Morris and lived in London where her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1887-1891. Recent research shows that work previously attributed to Emma Florence Harrison is in fact by Florence Susan Harrison and that the earlier attribution was spurious. unknown

Some age related pushing and fraying to the spine tips with some rubbing to the corners and edges in places. Moderating spotting to the blank end-papers otherwise internally clean with just some minor age related handling marks etc. The binding remains tight with just some early easing in places at the hinges. Very good condition in an almost very good dustwrapper. Cream cloth large pictorial onlay to spine and front board front board shows boy cooking over an open fire whilst girl is passing sticks for fire. First story is 'The Griffins' by Florence Harrison. Colour frontis shows 'The Brownie Gets His Cream'. Colour & b/w illustrations. Boards clean worn at corners. Name in ink to front pastedown. A few minor foxspots and light marks to margins. Colour plate "She bore away from the danger" has been neatly trimmed away on bottom margin about an inch missing but still bears the title of the plate and has a few small closed tears to vertical edge. London & New York: Blackie & Caldwell 1907. Near fine. First edition American issue printed on dark green paper that contrasts vividly with the tipped-in color plates in Harrison's distinctive style. Given the clear Pre-Raphaelite characteristics in her work it is unsurprising to note that she was the first woman to be a commercial illustrator for the work of Christina Rossetti - indeed it was in part due to the success of RHYME OF A RUN that the Glaswegian publisher Blackie asked her to take on a major project. One of Harrison's particular touches is the heavy black outlines around characters giving her Art Nouveau-influenced illustrations an effect not unlike stained glass. It is thanks to the work of book collector Mary Rosalind Jacobs that Florence Harrison was identified only in the 21st century as the Australian-born Florence Susan Harrison not the English artist Emma Florence Harrison. A beautiful copy of Harrison's second book scarce in the American issue and in this condition. 9'' x 11.25''. Original green pictorial cloth gilt. Green patterned endpapers. Printed on heavy dark green paper. Illustrated by Harrison with elaborately ornamented title page lettered in red 21 tipped-in color plates 10 full-page black-and-white designs and many black-and-white vignettes. A bit of the creasing to some plates as in virtually all copies due to a finishing fault with the publisher. Faint spotting to rear board and very minor rubbing to extremities. Front corners slightly frayed and bumped not affecting pages. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Closed tear and minor chipping to the sixth color plate. Closed tear and slight creasing to upper margin of the following seventh color plate.
