A British privateer is wrecked off the east coast of South America during a storm and a young survivor Hugh Carton is plucked from the sea by the crew of the Storm-Bird a pirate ship. After rounding Cape Horn off the coast of Peru the ship's captain weary of his career of crime flees the ship with Claire his ward and Hugh. During the escape the captain is killed by the pirates. Claire and Hugh reach land where they are rescued by Incas. They are taken to a mountain stronghold where the Incas are preparing for war with the Spanish conquerors. Upon learning that Claire is to be sacrificed to insure a Inca victory in the war to come Claire and Hugh escape with the aid a friendly Inca. The pair flee by boat down a river are rescued at sea by a Spanish ship which is taken as a prize by a British ship and return safely to England where they marry and prosper Hugh buys a share in a shipping company with treasure given to him by his Inca friend.
