Agetoned and yellowed paper with page 3 having a 1/2 inch piece of paper missing on the bottom right not affecting any manuscript otherwise very good condition. This early poem 1820 written by John Holland caused great publication. Holland's poem "The Rainbow" 1820 published anonymously around the same time as one on the same subject by Thomas Campbell written in 1819 To the Rainbow and also published it in 1821 in The New Monthly Magazine. Holland's poem "The Rainbow" with later publishing was frequently anthologised as Campbell's. In his book The Life of John Holland published in 1874 John Holland in a letter to Miss Anne Cowley page 49 he explains in full detail the story of the confusion from his perspective of course. He also specifically mentions the date of May 12 1820 which is the day he wrote this and the same date written on the one we are offering. John Holland was an English poet and newspaper editor of the Sheffield Iris and co-editor of the Sheffield Mercury. In 1832 was elected curator of the Sheffield Literary and Philosophical Society a position he held until his death.
