Original single-sheet chromolithograph of exceptionally fine quality. Overall size 24 x 16.5 cm, printed on heavy paper. Bearing at foot the legend "Generale staf". Fine. (Short marginal tear, well away from image, discreetly mended.) - - Write for a full list of these prints. - - Beautiful and exquisitely produced chromolithographic plate from "Onze Krijgsmacht", P. F. Brunings' highly acclaimed work. It depicts two officers of the General Staff, one mounted, the second standing, both wearing sabers of the Cavalry. A battle scene in the background, just vaguely depicted. Rich, dense colours with excellent gloss; beautifully heightened in gold. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least nine separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than twenty. The plate is in its original state; one margin is yet untrimmed, with the original stab-holes. First and only edition of Brunings' hallmark series of Dutch military uniforms of the 2nd half of the 19th century. (Lipperheide 2260; Colas 464).

Some leaves still unopened. A very handsome copy. ~ First edition. This copy is, or was intended to be, a Presentation Copy from the Author to Maréchal Comte Randon, Marshall of France. With an autograph letter, handwritten in ink in a very neat hand by Gerlach, signed by himself, dated March 2, 1860, addressed to the Maréchal. It comprises a large leaf folded into a four-page document (last page blank), with 47 lines of text, date, and signature. "I request Your Excellency to be willing to accept this copy of the Military annals of the Dutch East-Indies," it opens, written in French. Expressing his appreciation to Randon's military achievements, he begs that the book will be presented to His Majesty the Emperor of the French, continuing, "Voilà monsieur le Maréchal ce qui me porte à vous offrir ce travail et à vous prier d'être mon interprète auprès de l'Auguste chef du peuple français pour que Sa Majesté daigne accepter un exemplaire de mon livre." The letter is in exceptionally fine condition though a bit foxed. Jacques Louis César Alexandre, Maréchal Comte Randon (1795-1871). The author, Abraham Jean Arnaud Gerlach, was born in 1811 in Groningen. He received his education at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie, graduating as Lieutenant of the Artillery. As Colonel he later had a long teaching career at the same academy, and contributed regularly to military studies and publications. He translated his "Fastes militaires des Indes" into Dutch, and published it in Zalt-Bommel and Paris in 1874-75 as the three-volume set "Neerlands heldenfeiten in Oost-Indië". He died in 1906. The importance of this work is remarkable: OCLC lists no less than 20 major North American libraries who keep a copy, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Washington, Princeton, and Columbia university libraries, as well as NYPL. With 34 text illustrations. Pictorial title-page printed in colour. Hardcover, bound in the original illustrated cloth, gilt. In fine internal condition. Overall an excellent copy, with all plates in exceptionally fine state of preservation. ~ Major General F. J. van Lier's copy, with his entry and signature to front flyleaf. Noteworthy is the technique in which the fine plates in this book are produced. The monochromatic plates are printed in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. The colour plates are not chromolithographs as it is sometimes erratically assumed. At the end of the 19th century the term "chromotypograph", implying colour printed from raised metal, as type is, was used for colour prints which made use of metal relief blocks. It is indeed the process used in this book; the colour plates were printed from etched metal blocks, a relief method rather than planographic. [Descriptive text Copyright Librarium, The Hague]

Battleship "Waterloo"'s Anchor: 19th Century Tinted Lithograph Print.
Fine original 19th century tinted lithograph. Image size ca. 160 mm X 220 mm. Paper size ca. 240 mm X 315 mm. Artists' and Publisher's names printed below image. In overall fine condition (some spots in margin; miniature triangular stamp just touching image area). - - Battleships "Waterloo" and "Wassenaer" left Holland in January 1827, having on board a total of 3,000 troops of the Dutch Expedition Force to the East Indies. Though the giant anchor managed to save the "Waterloo" en-route, fighting a severe storm, the death toll among the Force's soldiers during their service in the East Indies was horrible: only 300 returned home. Later, the anchor was brought to the Netherlands as a gift to the King. In 1880, the artists father and son van Looy made a stone lithograph of it. It was printed by the famous stone-lithographers firm of S. Lankhout & Co., of The Hague, and published in 1881 by Publisher Gouda Quint, of Arnhem.
