Illustrated with the engraved frontispiece portrait. 8vo bound in later half-calf over marbled boards the spine with raised bands compartments decorated with panel designs in gilt black morocco lettering label gilt. 2 135; 62 appendix pp. A very well preserved unpressed and crisp copy the portrait with a bit of old evidence of damp unobtrusive and visually mostly confined to the verso. An English soldier adventurer and Jacobite conspirator Bernardi's involvement in an assassination plot against William III led to his subsequent forty-year imprisonment without proper trial in Newgate. While the principal conspirators were executed Bernardi and five others were held without coming to trial initially for a year ostensibly to gather further evidence. However their continued imprisonment was sanctioned by subsequent Acts even after William III's death. Bernardi's life in prison was made difficult by effects of the old wounds he had sustained in the 1670s. Bernardi also complained that his confinement in the "dismal and loathsome" gaol had cost him "above seven hundred pounds for his lodging". J. Newcomb hardcover

Drophead title with the second part reading in its entirety: 'County Court Judge Bodkin K.C. at the conclusion of the Ennis County Clare Quarter Sessions on February 5 1921 made a grave statement as to the violence committed by the forces of the Crown in Ireland in the following words: -'. The article reprints a report by Bodkin to the Rt Hon. Dark gray-green publisher’s cloth portfolio pocket binding decorative borders in blind gilt lettering stamped on front cover a NF copy. First edition thus of this very scarce dissected pocket map of Ireland published against the backdrop of the full impact of the Great Potato Famine which from 1841-1851 resulted in the diaspora and death of nearly 30% of the Irish population and as reflected in the mileage table mounted with the map the population in 1845 had already dropped from 8.2 million in 1841 to 7.7 million by 1844 and it would plummet further to below 6.5 million by 1851. The bulk of these emigrated to the United States Canada and the United Kingdom resulting in the fact that Ireland’s current population still resides below the high of 1841 and nearly 38 million Irish-Americans claim descent from the successive waves of migration much of which channeled through New York’s Lower East Side and the Bowery in the 19th-Century. John Walker 1787-1873 was a British mapmaker engraver lithographer hydrographer draughtsman and publisher publishing nautical charts and geographical maps with his brothers Charles and Alexander in their firm J.&C. Walker located at 9 Castle Street Holborn from 1841-1847 and moving to 37 Castle St. in 1848 where they remained to 1875. Much of their work was published under the auspices of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge or S.D.U.K. Worldcat locates 1 copy Yale. J.&C. Barbarism Vs. Civilization. England's Savage Allies in Her War Against Germany broadsheet
New York 1915. Irish propaganda targeting the British during W.W.I. from the Irish World of January 30 1915. During W.W.I the struggle for Irish independence was suspended with the Nationalist forces splitting over support of the war. This handbill appears to be an effort to incite hatred of the British with racist descriptions of Fijian soldiers "the cannibals we may say" who fought for the British. There is a clear preference for Germany - "And these are the savages the cannibals we may say whom Britain is bringing over to fight the most enlightened nation of Melancthon and SchlegeL of Kant. of Mozart and Beethoven and Wagner of Goethe and Heine." <br /> <br /> The text characterized the Fijians as cannibals "dark copper colored have black eyes and bushy hair worn in the form of a mop" short stature protruding stomachs legs bowed and feet flat and usually nude. The photograph shows the Fijian soldiers standing at attention behind a British Officer photo by Paul Thompson. <br /> <br /> The text of the handbill is extracted from The Irish World and American Industrial Liberator published in New York between 1878-1951. Hand bill 9 x 7 3/4" printed in blue on cream paper verso blank. Creased with marginal tears and small margin loss. <br /> <br /> Unrecorded on OCLC although there is a W.W.I poster with the title "Civilization Vs. Barbarism" 1914 but associated with Red Cross Week. OCLC: 894257435. unknown

Stannard's pamphlet is in support of the prosection of Charles Lucas in the Irish House of Commons.

First edition, folio (327 x 209 mm), [3], 4-28pp., ornament on title and last page, on p.28 under the word 'Finis' there are two lines of errata, some light spotting, later wrappers contained in a red cloth folding case. Sir Walter Scott "was the first of Swift's editors to print a number of extra verses which according to a note in a Ms. transcript among the Orrery Papers at Harvard 'ought to have been inserted.... if it had been safe to print them'." These verses were omitted by the printer on political grounds. No copy of an earlier Dublin edition of this masterly satire is known: this edition (published in London, 31 Dec. 1733), though described as 're-printed', is presumed to be the first. 'Printed for the Committee in favour of Amending the Law relating to the Property of Married Women.' 'A. Ireland & Co. Printers Manchester.' 1869. 8pp. 12mo. Drophead title beneath heading: 'Printed for the Committee in favour of Amending the Law relating to the Property of Married Women.' In good condition lightly-aged no wraps disbound. The last three paragraphs relating to Palmer's incarceration at Newgate have been crossed through but are still entirely legible indicating that the present copy was distributed after her release. Begins: 'THE following case was reported in the Times of the 15th January 1869:- CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT JAN. 14. OLD COURT. Before Mr. Justice KEATING. Sarah Palmer 40 was indicted for feloniously wounding James Palmer with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. .' Last two paragraph scored through the first regarding Mrs Palmer's incarceration in Newgate and the second relating to 'A Committee . formed to assist Susannah Palmer'. Small Archive Three Letters from Joseph Norton Ireland Offering to Sell His Collection to Fellow Theater Historian Douglas Taylor

Three letters from theater historian and biographer Joseph Norton Ireland to collector and biographer Douglas Taylor .<br /> <br /> 1. Letter dated December 8th 1897. 1 pp. Ireland tells Taylor of the decline in his physical and mental faculties before he summarizes his collection which includes the Treasurer's books of the Old Park Theater portraits & photographs of performers and bound sets of playbills. Finally he offers a nearly complete set of John Boydell's Shakespeare engravings for the amount of $40.<br /> <br /> 2. Letter dated December 16th 1897. 2 pp.Taylor clearly wanted the Boydell engravings as Ireland's second letter was sent with an enclosed return check to Taylor who had overpaid for the set. "I return your check for $40 as I think you misunderstand my writing 'I would see all for that amount' I then referred to the Shakespeare engravings which were at the close of my letter the small ones and the large ones and I meant to say I would sell them all large & small for that amount. I think the whole collection is worth rather more than that." <br /> <br /> 3. Letter dated March 4th 1898. 1 pp. Contains a short list of Ireland's collection of autograph letters all bound which he suspects "will be of little use" to Taylor.<br /> <br /> Ioseph Norton Ireland 1817-1898 wrote "Records of the New York Stage from 1750-1860 1866; "Mrs. Duff" 1882; and "A memoir of the professional life of Thomas Abthorpe Cooper" 1888.<br /> <br /> Douglas Taylor 1830-1913 was president of the Dunlap Society whose own biographical works included "Autobiography of Clara Fisher Maeder" 1897 and "Autobiographical sketch of Mrs. John Drew" 1899. unknown

1913. Ireland: June 16-18 1913. <br /> <br /> Small lined notebook 11x17.5 cm 56 pp. orange card covers titled by hand spine reinforced with tape. Approx. 28 pages filled with neat ink manuscript entries illustrated with four small original sepia photos and a hand-drawn folded map tipped to inside of front cover. Covers a little worn contents age-toned but entirely legible.<br /> <br /> § A delightfully detailed record of an amusingly rushed school trip to Ireland made by an English schoolboy in 1913. The boys and several masters departed from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire it seems likely they attended Wycliffe College prep school and travelled by train to Fishguard in Wales and from there by boat to Rosslare Harbour in Country Wexford Ireland. Then by train char-a-banc a governess cart ponies and finally boats they tore across the south of Ireland to Killarney and back in a single day. The dutiful author of the journal prepares for the trip with several lists: "General time-table" "List of required articles" including "change of socks.cup soup-plate. rug if room" "Things to be noticed" Waterford Harbour Mountains Lakes Cattle Grazing. and a very thorough plan for "Meals" cornflakes chocolate bananas squashed fly biscuits. The journal itself is neatly written and full of detail particularly of the various vehicles Irish trains get a thorough review and his glimpses of "real Ireland". Four small mounted photos show a bridge in Kerry viewed from a boat Ross Castle "A Jaunting Bar" a kind of horse-drawn carriage and happily "the Author" who appears to be in his early teens. The star of the journal is a large folding map of the trip carefully hand-drawn and keyed and mounted inside the front cover. unknown
