‎BARDIC SYNTACTICAL TRACTS‎

‎Dublin: Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies 1979. Facsimile reprint of the 1944 edition. Blue cloth. xx 304 pp. Nice bookplate on front pastedown; very nearly fine otherwise. Text in Irish with notes and intro. in English. "Portions of four MSS are here printed; they are those which deal with the grammar and - to some extent at least - with the metre of Bardic Poetry. Their whole style and matter make it clear that they were intended as hand-books to be used by the professors in the Bardic schools for the instruction of their scholars in correct Bardic language and versification. A comparison of each of the MSS with the others strongly suggests that they arr derive from a common source viz that they contain portions partly the same partly different of a more comprehensive and more detailed work on the subject." - Introduction. ‎Philadelphia: Lippincott 1930. Octavo viii 303 1 pp. Mauve cloth lettered in black. Red topstain. Red on buff endpapers. 15 Feb. 1932 Montreal ink name plus ink notation that "Farrell is really Mary L. Skrine" on front free endpaper else a fine copy. Jacket has tiny chips to spine tips corners; spine slightly age darkened with light rubbing to folds a few small spots; VG otherwise. The spine of the jacket states "Second Printing". A comparison of this copy of the book itself with another in jacket without the second printing notice revealed no differences to this eye. Both have the Lippincott seal on verso of title and both jackets have a $2.50 price two quotes on front panel from Clemence Dane and Hugh Walpole rear flap advertising CALF LOVE by Vernon Bartlett and rear panel has author photo beneath which are five quotes from reviews about the author. Thus the only difference I could find between the two was the second printing statement on the jacket spine. An uncommon edition scarce in jacket of one of her early novels of the Anglo-Irish sporting scene. Farrell also writes as "Molly Keane". First US printing. Hardcover. Lippincott‎
