Ingestre Hall Staffordshire 27 August 1825. 1p. 4to. Bifolium addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'The Revd Mr Cory Blithfield'. In good condition on aged paper with small closed tear in top left-hand corner. He informs Cory that Lord Bagot and his family will be visiting him and playfully reminds him: 'You will recollect you owe me a Visit at least you said you wd. favor me with your Company some day or another - I think you will never find us so pleasant as when surrounded by your excellent Blithfield friends.' Charles Kean actor. Autograph Letter Signed 'Charles Kean' to the actor Leigh Murray regarding the securing of a Drury Lane theatre box from the doorkeeper 'Mr. Massingham'.With biographical item
'Thursday' no date or place but written from London while performing at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. 1p 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged with traces of grey-paper mount on blank reverse and minor discolouration at one edge from glue used. The actor Henry Leigh Murray 1820-1870 is identified in pencil as the recipient. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir You are quite welcome to a Private. Box if there is one to spare'. He asks him to 'call or send to Mr. Massingham at the Box Office at 1/2 past 4 o'clock who has received instructions to attend to your wishes if all the Boxes are not let by that time'. Massingham was for upwards of forty years from the 1790s to the 1830s the door keeper at Drury Lane. The letter is accompanied by a cutting of a magazine article by Henry J. Byron 'Charles Kean and the Utility Gentleman. A Reminiscence'. 'Thursday' [no date or place, but written from London, while performing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane]. unknown

15 May to Lady Ashbourneand 11 August to Lord Ashbourne years not stated but between 1886 and 1889; on letterheads of the Vice Regal Lodge Dublin. Both items good on lightly-aged paper. Letter One 15 May to Lady Ashbourne: 16mo 2 pp. Nine lines. Accepting an invitation to a garden-party. 'I have two Cricket Matches . I have promised to go for an hour to the Unionists Cricket Match but could come on to you after that if that day suited you.' Letter Two 11 August to Lord Ashbourne: 12mo 2 pp. Fourteen lines. He thanks him for the 'Letters & enclosed Draft'. 'I had to send my Letter off before it arrived as the <> takes place to-day but fortunately it was drawn on almost identical lines as yours so it is all right. Balfour is here .' The rest of the letter is hurriedly written and difficult to decipher. E sembra addirittura quasi spenta l'eco della Rivolta di Pasqua, di Michael Collins, dell'lRA, se non ci fossero una mitologia rock o il cinema hollywoodiano a mantenerla viva e toccante nella memoria del pubblico occidentale. Le "Impressioni irlandesi" dello scrittore britannico Chesterton ci proiettano in quei momenti con la crudezza della testimonianza diretta, ma anche con l'acuta precisione di un osservatore che vuole capire. Scritte in occasione del viaggio intrapreso da Chesterton nel 1918 su invito dell'amico e poeta William Butler Yeats, le "Impressioni" traggono spunto dai luoghi fisici, dai segni e dai simboli della cultura irlandese per ragionare sull'essenza di quella terra e sul carattere di quel popolo. In questo sforzo di riflessione, per il bene anche del Regno Unito, le "Impressioni irlandesi" attraversano le profondità dello spirito d'Irlanda, affrontano a viso aperto gli errori storici dell'Inghilterra, e grazie alla penna fine di un grande scrittore ci offrono una serie inarrestabile di fulminanti verità, valide per ogni tempo e ogni luogo. Il risultato - come scrive Gregory Dowling nell'Introduzione - è quello di un libro straordinariamente generoso. Una generosità di spirito che perfino George Bernard Shaw, amico sempre critico di Chesterton, ammise, recensendo per primo le "Impressioni irlandesi".
