A scarce and dense collection of works from Man A Monthly Record of Anthropological Science rebound in cloth. This collection is nine volumes bound as four and includes Volumes 40 to 48 from 1940-1948. From the The Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland.Densely illustrated throughout. From the library of Lord Raglan with his book plate to the first pastedowns of each book. Includes a signed letter to Raglan from Anthony Christie the Honorary Secretary of The Royal Anthropological Institute. From the library of Lord Raglan Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated Cefntilla Court was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. Volume XL 1940 no. 1-230 with plates A-M. With one colour plate; Volume XLI 1941 no. 1-103 with plates A-F; Volume XLII 1942 no. 1-97 with plates A-F bound as one. Volume XLIII 1943 no. 1-124 with plates A-F and Volume XLIV 1944 no. 1-121 with plates A-G bound as one. An uber-sturdy attractive tightly bound internally clean hardcover copy with unbruised tips neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library with neither highlighting nor underlining. Bound handsomely in dark blue buckram cloth with tips and spine bound in leather complete with six compartments scribed by five raised bands and with gilt lettering and fleurs-de-lis to spine rubbed a bit but attractive. Toning to and foxing and soiling of front endpapers four printed stickers likely denoting former ex-libris status inside front flap some scattered foxing throughout else clean and unmarked. Notes regarding the Society formerly dubbed the Kilkenny Archaeological Society its members subscribers and then followed by learned papers about reliquaries and antiquaries ossuaries monuments remnants of past human societies and cultures. Black-and-white illustrations galore. Nice tri-panel double-folding architectural rendering of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin the plan of the crypt plus fine black-and-white renderings of door openings seals watermarks and archaeological findings. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of e.g. notes index and bibliography. 3 2-334 pp.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
