De Vlaamse schilder en graficus Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941 - 1985) was het om 'het gloeien van kleuren' en 'het wonder van het licht' te doen. Om dat vast te leggen had hij meestal genoeg aan de kamers van zijn eigen huis, waar zacht daglicht over wanden en meubels streek en bloemen, fruit en stoffen gloeiden in het licht of de schaduw. Uit zijn werk spreekt een aanstekelijke liefde en aandacht voor alledaagse situaties en spullen. In dit boek is voor het eerst zijn volledige grafische oeuvre bijeengebracht, dat in de afgelopen jaren voor een groot deel is verworven door het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Van Ruyssevelt, bij leven grafiekdocent aan de Koninklijke Academie in Antwerpen, was een meesterlijke etser. In arceringen en drukinkt wist hij binnenskamerse schemering op te roepen, tegenlicht in een stilleven voor het raam en refl ecties in glas of gelakt hout. De etsen zijn altijd figuratief en suggestief tegelijk: precieze vormen en stofuitdrukking zijn ondergeschikt aan het grote geheel van sfeer en compositie. Hoeveel Van Ruyssevelt ook dicht arceerde, hij liet vooral van alles open.
