‎Pieter Bruegel wordt vaak beschouwd als d belichaming van de Vlaamse identiteit. Waarom is dat zo, sinds de revival van zijn werk rond 1900? Hoe komt het dat hij uitgroeide tot een icoon, een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie n een huizenhoog clich ? In de expo Feast of Fools. Bruegel herontdekt, van 7 april tot 28 juli 2019, maakt de bezoeker kennis met een reeks sleutelwerken van Vlaamse en internationale kunstenaars die 'iets met Bruegel hebben'. Ze knopen aan bij zijn thema's, herinterpreteren die, citeren hem, . en tonen zo aan dat zijn werk niets aan relevantie heeft ingeboet. De tentoonstelling vertrekt vanuit 'het grote misverstand', toen Bruegel in de nadagen van de romantiek geproclameerd werd tot een diep in de Vlaamse klei gewortelde picturale bard van boerenpsalmen, krakende sneeuwlandschappen en eeuwig ruisende korenvelden. Hij peilt naar de manier waarop Vlaamse en bij uitbreiding Belgische kunstenaars tijdens het interbellum omgingen met zijn artistiek legaat, en hoe daarbij zowel neo-Bruegelbeelden als pastiche-overschrijdend, interessant nieuw werk ontstonden. Hierbij aansluitend trekt de expo verschillende hedendaagse registers open, met kunst, performance en muziek. Aan een tiental kunstenaars wordt gevraagd om in te spelen op thema's uit Bruegels oeuvre, of op de interpretatie daarvan door de generatie van de herontdekkers. Deze creaties worden gekoppeld aan binnen de context relevant bestaand werk van grote namen zoals Hans Op de Beeck, Marcel Broodthaers, The Chapman Brothers, Jeff Wall, Werner T bke, . Zes thema's vormen de rode draad. 1. Back to the Roots. In het werk van Pieter Bruegel komen nogal wat schilderijen voor die sc nes uit het boerenleven voorstellen. Dit is ongetwijfeld het meest bekende aspect van zijn oeuvre, dat helaas vaak tot pure folklore en 'koekjesdozenromantiek' werd gereduceerd. 2. In God We Trust (do we?). In de zestiende eeuw was het christendom alomtegenwoordig. Bruegel en zijn tijdgenoten groeiden ermee op en kenden de belangrijkste bijbelse verhalen. Deze komen dan ook veelvuldig voor in het oeuvre van Bruegel. 3. Everybody Hurts. In zijn tijd was Bruegel een buitenbeentje. Hij schilderde het gewone leven, soms subtiel, soms rauw, zonder franje en vaak karikaturaal. 'Foolishness' krijgt bij Bruegel verschillende betekenissen: mengvormen tussen mens en dier, narren en zotskappen, dronkenlappen, blinden en misvormden, ... maar ook het kleinmenselijke, het menselijke falen of domheid tout court. Het portretteren van figuren die leven aan de rand van de maatschappij en de specifieke interesse in deze marginaliteit is ook sterk aanwezig bij tal van moderne en hedendaagse kunstenaars. 4. We Are at War. Geweld, oorlog en dood komen vaak voor in het werk van Bruegel. Zijn tijd werd gedomineerd door geweld en (pest)epidemie n, het was ook de eeuw van de strijd tussen katholieken en protestanten. Volgens sommige kunsthistorici worden de werken van Bruegel op het einde van zijn leven grimmiger en cynischer. 5. Fifty Shades of White. De landschapsschilderkunst werd pas in Bruegels tijd als een echte kunstdiscipline aanzien. De tentoonstelling kan dan ook niet nalaten om dit thema te presenteren op een plek waar je het zestiende-eeuwse landschap nog redelijk intact kan zien. Sneeuwlandschappen, met het geraffineerde spelen met verschillende tinten wit, maar ook de emotionele witheid (leegte, eindeloosheid, melancholie, eenzaamheid, stilte) staan hier centraal. 6. Keep Calm and Feast on. In enkele werken van Bruegel wordt gefeest. Het is vreemd dat net dit aspect van het oeuvre (dat men later 'Bruegeliaans' is gaan noemen) een eigen leven ging leiden. In de totaliteit van zijn werk is het aantal feestsc nes niet alleen beperkt, zij stralen bovendien weinig feestvreugde uit. Nieuw werk van Rimini Protokoll en Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker betrekt ook de museumtuin en het kasteelpark bij dit project, dat hierdoor richting 'Gesamtkunstwerk' laveert.‎
