Good. - A 17 inch high by 22-3/4 inch wide sheet of paper has been folded in half & then folded 2 additional times to form a document 8-1/2 inches high by 4 inches wide. The printed document is filled in in ink by an agent and signed "Willard Ives" beside his printed title "President". Illustrated with an engraving of the fire insurance company's building. There is some staining and light soiling to the document & 1 corner is creased. There is a crease with short tears to the right edge & a tear & chip along the first fold. Good. <p>Though he liked best to be known as a farmer and owned Hillcrest Farm in Watertown for 48 years Willard Ives 1806-1896 was a noted and active participant in the life of Jefferson County and beyond. He was a leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church was a delegate to the world convention of Methodists held in London in 1846 and served as President of Ives Seminary in Antwerp NY. In addition to his presidency of the fire insurance company he was a director of the Bank of Watertown a founder and second president of the Jefferson County Orphan Asylum and president of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society in 1848. He was one of the organizers of Syracuse University and represented his district in Congress as a Democrat from 1851-53.</p> Watertown, NY: June 3, 1877.‎

‎This checklist is the second in a series of volumes describing the silver-stained glass roundels and unipartite panels from the Middle Ages to the 18th century found in public buildings, museums and private collections in the present five provinces of Flanders (Belgium). The present volume covers the Provinces of East and West Flanders (more or less the former County of Flanders). The first checklist, concerning the Province of Antwerp, was published in 2007. Additional volumes for the Provinces of Flemish Brabant and Limburg (Vol. 3), and the one with Addenda (Vol. 4) are in the planning stage. The former County of Flanders, with the cities of Bruges and Ghent, must once have displayed huge quantities of stained glass, which for the most part have been lost or relocated. The causes and reasons for this loss include natural calamities, fires, deliberate destruction and neglect. Most of the surviving roundels are now in foreign collections: on the continent; in Great Britain; or in the United States of America. It is worthy of note that great efforts have been made in the USA and Great Britain to compile and publish checklists of silver-stained roundels and other small panels, originating from the Low Countries, whilst here, where they were produced, this series is the first genuine overview that has ever been published. During the 15th and 16th centuries roundels and small panels played an important role as 'public relations' gifts among the upper classes, the church and its associated religious orders. As these gifts played a very significant role in social life, demand for these items was very high. It is clear that the manufacture of roundels and small panels was a substantial part of the earnings of these glass workshops, which also produced monumental windows. The most popular themes were predominantly religious, but also included heraldic, secular, mythological and allegorical subjects. The seasons and months and labours of the year were also commonly found. In the late 16th and the 17th centuries the range of iconographical subjects became more secular with, among other themes, representations of professions. Heraldry also remained very important, and in the second half of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries nearly all roundels and panels depicted armorials and included the name of their donors.‎

Duizenden landverhuizers zakten vanuit heel Europa af naar Antwerpen om vanaf hier de overtocht te wagen naar het nieuwe vaderland, Amerika.nReeds vanaf 1843, het jaar dat de spoorweglijn tussen Antwerpen en Keulen werd voltooid, arriveerden de eerste landverhuizers in de stad. Ze kwamen vooral uit Polen, Rusland, Duitsland en oostenrijk. Ook Vlamingen en Walen waagden de overtocht. De vervolgingen van de Joden in Oost-Europa waren niet vreemd aan de stroom van Joodse emigranten die al vanaf ongeveer 1875 op gang kwam.nHet ligt in de bedoeling om aan het publiek een stevige brok sociale geschiedenis aan te bieden en niet alleen scheepvaartgeschiedenis zoals men van een maritiem museum gewoon is.nWie waren deze landverhuizers, vanwaar kwamen ze, waarom, hoe was hun aankomst en verblijf in de stad, met welke schepen vertrokken ze, hoe was de overtocht, hoe was de aankomst en het leven in de Nieuwe Wereld, ..nDe emigrantenverhalen die in archieven en uit getuigenissen werden gevonden lijken nu actueler dan ooit en doen denken aan de hedendaagse situaties van migranten, vluchtelingen, illegalen. De idee groeide om ook een actualisatieluik te koppelen aan deze expo, een kennismaking met de huidige Antwerpenaars, een mix van meer dan 150 verschillende nationaliteiten. Ook het verhaal van deze mensen zal worden gebracht.‎
