‎Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) werd tijdens zijn leven geconfronteerd met diverse kunststromingen. Tijdens zijn studie aan de Antwerpse academie werd het onderricht er volledig gecontroleerd door de epigonen van Henri Leys. Vernieuwers volgens het impressionisme of pointillisme werd het leven moeilijk gemaakt en zij verlieten de metropool om zich in Brussel te vestigen. De oprichting van Kunst van Heden in 1905 betekende een keerpunt in het Antwerpse artistieke leven, dat langzaam maar zeker opnieuw internationale aansluiting vond. De Eerste Wereldoorlog maakte een abrupt einde aan de stijgende belangstelling naar zijn oeuvre. Zijn oorlogstekeningen werden in 1919 vergeleken met die van Kollwitz, Forain en Steinlen. Na de Groote Oorlog kreeg ook in ons land het expressionisme meer aandacht. Kunst van Heden wijdde haar salon van 1926 volledig aan de moderne Franse kunst. Van Mieghem bestudeerde er belangrijke werken van o.a. Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Modigliani, Zadkine en Rouault, een confrontatie die een bijzondere invloed op hem uitoefende. De intimistische en religieuze onderwerpen, naast prachtige bloemstukken en stillevens die de kunstenaar onder invloed van de art deco in de beslotenheid van Sint-Paulusstraat 30 maakte, zou hij echter nooit exposeren. Scarcely any images have been preserved of the mass migration from Europe to the New World which occurred between 1850 and 1940. ‎Willem Usselincx, de geestelijk vader van de West-Indische Compagnie, Nadat Antwerpen in 1585 door de Spanjaarden was veroverd, trokken veel handelaren, ambachtslieden en geleerden naar de Republiek om zich daar blijvend te vestigen. Dankzij deze vluchtelingen werden onbekende takken van nijverheid en kennis over navigatie, geografie en cartografie in de Republiek geintroduceerd. Om concurrentie van andere kooplieden tegen te gaan en om risico?s te delen, sloten kooplieden zich aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw in compagnieen aaneen. De scheepvaart op Nieuw-Nederland ontstond min of meer toevallig. In 1609, het jaar waarin de Republiek een wapenstilstandsverdrag met Spanje had gesloten, namen de bewindhebbers van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) de Engelse ontdekkingsreiziger Henry Hudson in dienst om een noordelijke zeeweg naar Azie te zoeken. De gedachten om een compagnie te stichten voor de handel en scheepvaart in het Atlantische gebied werd al geopperd bij het begin van deze handel en scheepvaart. De eerste die de oprichting van een West-Indische Compagnie voorstelde, was Willem Usselincx, een in Antwerpen geboren koopman die zich in 1591 te Middelburg had gevestigd. 5 Volgens Willem Usselincx zaten er twee grote voordelen aan het oprichten van een compagnie voor het Atlantisch gebied. Ten eerste zou een West-Indische Compagnie een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen in de strijd tegen Spanje. De strijd zou zich gaan verplaatsen van de Republiek naar de verre gewesten en de Spaanse hegemonie zou aangevallen kunnen worden terwijl de welvaart in de Republiek zou toenemen. Ten tweede kon een West-Indische Compagnie volgens Usselincx kolonien stichten in de nieuwe wereld waar inwoners uit de Republiek en andere calvinisten zich konden vestigen. Door de openstelling van het Red Star Museum in Antwerpen is gebleken dat men met deze mentor een historisch belangrijk puzzelstuk heeft gevonden, die eigenlijk internationaal veel te weinig aandacht had gekregen. daarom dit fraaie uitgave.‎
