Small wood-engraved royal arms of Portugal on the title page. Uncut. Tear on frontis 7 cm. without loss. Overall in good condition. Old ink notes at head and foot of frontispiece verso bleeding through to blank part of frontispiece: "Resume da Estoria de Portugal." Line scored on p. 25. Frontispiece portrait 96 iv 20 pp. LACKING pp. 3-13 of the final section. First edition in Portuguese printed clandestinely and in haste probably in Lisbon. InnocÂncio notes in accordance with the title page that this Manifesto was originally published in Paris in French but is unable to supply bibliographical details; he merely states that copies are extremely rare because the ones shipped to Portugal were seized by customs. Canto had never seen the work in French and had seen only his own copy in Portuguese. The translator complains on p. iii of the "imensas dificuldades" of printing this work for which he was compositor and printer for the first time in his life. After the list of errata on the final page he notes rather defensively "N‹o tivemos tempo de rever a obras toda e por isso apresentamos a correc‹o s˜ atÂŽ paginas 64." The translator's preface pp. 3-5 condemns the state of Portugal since 1820 when it first accepted a liberal Constitution. The main text with extensive footnotes and endnotes by the translator argues that the current state of Portugal is disastrous for its people dishonorable for the Quadruple Alliance and dangerous for other nations and that royalists comprise a significant portion of Portugal's citizenry. Lengthy discussions follow of D. Pedro's status as Emperor of Brazil and King of Portugal and of D. Miguel I's right to the throne. On pp. i-iv pp. the translator explains that the list of atrocities committed under the liberals which follows is necessarily limited because it could only be collected from official i.e. liberal periodicals and those could be expected to downplay such events. This list incomplete in this copy is entitled "Rella‹o de alguns assassinatos politicos perpetrados em Portugal pelos liberaes depois da Conven‹o d'Evora Monte." The Convention or Concession of Evoramonte was the document signed on May 26 1834 by which D. Miguel gave up all claim to the Portuguese throne ending the civil war that had raged between liberals and conservatives in Portugal. It also granted amnesty to those who had committed political crimes since 1826. Jo‹o da Cunha Neves e Carvalho Portugal Barcellos 1784-Ajuda 1856 was such a fervent adherent of D. Miguel that from 1834 to about 1841 he lived in exile in Paris. There he wrote several textbooks some of which were published anonymously. Back in Portugal he became a respected lawyer and a member of the Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa and the Instituto Historico Geographico do Brasil. His other works are on history including the history of law. Constantino Pereira da Costa who is generally acknowledged to be the translator published Elogio dedicado aos bons realistas portuguezes 1828 and Demonstra‹o politica sobre os extinctos direitos do Imperador do Brasil ‡ coroa de Portugal 1829.
