Weight: 0.6 kg Post free within Malaysia The gilt titling on the front cover is still sparkling and the spine has a little bit of rubbing. The title page has a neat business stamp together with a 'with compliments note' in ink. The binding is tight and there is mild tanning throughout. A lovely copy. Covers toned and marked with black ink spills in a few places text block browned old pencil inscription at head of title. A good clean copy. First edition of this uncommon and extensively illustrated commemorative publication produced by the North Borneo Company 1881-1946. Alongside a brief summary of the history and geography of the territory the company advertises the "progress" that it was making particularly in the areas of trade and railway construction. The book is in large part an advertisement to investors who are urged to apply to the Company's offices in Leadenhall Street for land and concessions. Illustrations include "The first train in North Borneo 3rd February 1898" the train was named "Progress" "Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee June 22nd 1897" "The Sultan of Sulu and Suite" and "Chinese mummers" as well as portrait photogaphs of 38 prominent British officials. Es handelt sich um ehemalige Bibliotheksbände ohne äußere Kennzeichnung (vordere Vorsätze mit Aufklebern und Fragmenten einer Leihkarte). Autobiographisches Werk des Briten Charles Johnson Brooke (1829 - 1917), der von 1868 an als so genannter "Weißer Raja" über das Königreich Sawarak auf Borneo herrschte, das von Brookes Onkel, dem Armeeangehörigen und Abenteurer James Brooke (1803 - 1868), begründet worden war. James Brookes war 1840 dem Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II. von Brunei bei der Befriedung eines Aufstandes der indigenen Bidayuh behilflich gewesen und hatte als Dank vom Sultan als Lehen ein riesiges Gebiet zur persönlichen Verwaltung erhalten. Später gelang es Brooke, seinen Herrschaftsbereich von der Oberhoheit des Sultans zu lösen und eine eigenständige Dynastie, die Weißen Rajas, zu begründen, die über drei Generationen über Sawarak herrschen sollte. Charles Brooke trat 1868 die Nachfolge seines kinderlosen Onkels an. Als dritter und letzter Herrscher der Brooke-Dynastie folgte ihm 1917 als dritter Weißer Raja sein Sohn Charles Vyner Brooke. Dieser wurde während des Zweiten Weltkriegs von der japanischen Armee vertrieben; er kehrte zwar 1945 nach Sawarak zurück, allerdings nur, um kurz darauf die Herrschaft über das Gebiet an die Briten zu übergeben. Später wurde Sarawak Teil der Föderation Malaysia. Das hier vorliegende Werk des zweiten Weißen Raja Charles Brooke gewährt faszinierende Einblicke in die vom Urwald geprägte Region Sawarak mit ihrer indigenen Bevölkerung. Mit 7 ganzseitigen Holzschnitt-Illustrationen und 3 Kartenskizzen. Die Faltkarte ist im vorliegenden Exemplar nicht enthalten.

8° grande (23,4x14,4 cm); (4), 411, (2) pp. 104 tav. e (4), 416 pp. e 100 c. di tav. fuori testo e due cartine più volte ripiegate. Nel 1843 uscì un terzo volume. Esemplare ancora in barbe. Bellissime legature in mezza pelle rossa con titolo e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso e piatti foderati con carta coeva rossa a rilievo. L'opera uscì nella celebre collana di monografie a se stanti dedicata ognuna ad un paese del mondo pubblicata con il titolo "L'universo o storia e descrizione di tutti i popoli". Prima edizione italiana di quest'opera curata dal celebre viaggiatore, politico e geografo francese Domeny de Rienzi che raccoglie la storia, la geografia ma anche gli usi e costumi, le lingue e l'economia dei territori ed isole dell'Oceania, Borneo, Melanesia, Micronesia e Polinesia, Malesia. Bellissime le duecento tavole fuori testo con immagini di luoghi, costumi e personaggi celebri. Esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione, in barbe ed in bella legatura.
