Imprenta Republicana. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio 28.5 x 18.5 cm. disbound. Caption title. One small stain. In good to very good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. 1 l. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. In 1828 Colombian forces under General Sucre defeated a much larger Peruvian force that was attempting to annex Ecuador. Under the terms of the Treaty of Guayaquil signed September 22 1829 the border was established between Gran Colombia and Peru Peru agreed to indemnify Colombia for all the expenses of war and Peru further agreed to replace - man for man - Colombian soldiers who had died deserted or become licenciados in the campaigns in Peru. Five thousand Peruvian soldiers were shipped off to Colombia. The anonymous author finds this third provision impossible to accept. He claims that the treaty was not properly ratified and that BolÃvar is attempting to enforce this provision merely to make Peru so weak that it can be occupied by BolÃvar. Briseño I 77. Dos Legaciones del Peru. text begins: Aunque el esclarecimiento de la cuestion que se ha suscitado en los periódicos sobre la admision de dos ministros públicos del Perú no puede ya producir resultado alguno satisfactorio .
n.pr. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio 29 x 19 cm. disbound nearly separated at fold. Caption title. Some small nicks at edges without loss; minor marginal repair on second leaf not affecting text. In good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. 2 ll. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. This debate over permitting two Peruvian ministers to Chile hinges on whether allowing two ministers implies acceptance of the legitimacy of both governments or whether such recognition merely establishes a means of communication with those governments. The anonymous author responding to articles in El Araucano and El Mercurio discusses diplomacy maritime law and the rights of nations with mention of blockades General Luis Orbegoso the United States before it won its battle with Great Britain D. Miguel in Portugal and Grotius. Given the frequent mentions of Santa Cruz and Bolivia this pamphlet was certainly published during Orbegoso's term as president of North Peru February 7-August 11 1836. The mention of a letter from Bolivia dated July 8 narrows the time down to late July or early August 1836.The author of Dos legaciones questions the legitimacy of the 1833 election that brought Orbegoso to the presidency as well as Obregoso's authority in Peru after he allied himself with President Andrés de Santa Cruz and formed the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy of which Santa Cruz was Supreme Protector and Orbegoso merely the president of the Republic of North Peru. Many Peruvian politicians who opposed the idea of the confederation fled to Chile where they were supported by Diego Portales. Not located in Briseño. Not located in CCPBE. Not located in Rebiun. [Peru]. [Law]
Grito de la Justicia Deprimida caption title
Arequipa 1829. 4pp. on a bifolium. Removed from a bound volume. A few small areas of worming slightly affecting text. Light toning and scattered faint foxing. An unrecorded and indignant diatribe concerning a mud-slinging match in the Peruvian town of Arequipa in the late 1820s which begins "Bien ruidosa ha sido la causa de los libelos famosos que corrieron ahora pocos meses en esta capital contra personas las mas notables de ella." The rest of the bifolium gives an account of the convoluted events that apparently involve several episodes of clear libel by several individuals for which their victims are having difficulty in obtaining legal remedy with the result that scandalous lies are now being spread with impunity. The author concludes by pleading for more swift reliable justice and equality before the law from authorities in Arequipa:<br /> <br /> "Si os mostrais débiles y preferis la inaccion sereis indignos de los destinos que ocupais. Patriotas y no patriotas todos son iguales ante la ley y no debeis permitir nunca que triunfe la impunidad: gloriaos en fin de padecer por la justicia pues asi dais el debido lleno à vuestros cargos."<br /> <br /> Surviving printing from Arequipa during this period is very scarce. unknown

Coleccion de los Principales Partes y Anuncios Relativos a la Campaña del Peru Desde 29 de Enero de 1821 en Que Tomó el Mando el Señor La Serna Hasta Fin de Marzo de 1824
Lima 1824. Good plus. 271pp. Modern paper boards printed spine label. Moderate tanning. Light worming to final leaves repaired slightly affecting text. Scarce printing of correspondence relating to the royalist military campaigns in Peru under Viceroy José de la Serna from the beginning of 1821 to early 1824. La Serna was installed as Viceroy in January 1821 following a petition of top royalist officers. He evacuated Lima and moved the colonial capital inland to Cuzco where he set about rebuilding his army and campaigning to recapture the territory lost by his predecessors. In this he was quite successful and by the beginning of 1824 he had recaptured almost all of Peru and penned in Bolivar at Trujillo. The correspondence included here follows this successful portion of his generalship and provides an important first hand accounting of events. Following this period however La Serna suffered his own military rebellion and was sufficiently weakened until he lost the Battle of Ayacucho and thereby all of Peru in December 1824. [Peru]. Valencia, John C.
Collection of Manuscript Letters Sent by John C. Valencia from Peru to His Wife and Aunt Back in New York City
Lima and Callao Peru 1861. Very good. Thirteen autograph letters signed totaling twenty-six pages. Original mailing folds minor wear some fold separations and short tears to a few letters. An informative collection of manuscript letters sent back to the United States by John C. Valencia a businessman working in Peru just before the Civil War. John is writing to his wife Josefina and his Aunt Brunner in New York City and Yorkville New York over roughly a two-year period between February 27 1859 and January 14 1861. Apparently Josefina and their children were living with Aunt Brunner in New York at least for a time while John was trying to conclude business related to Peruvian real estate held by his deceased brother and now owned by his sister-in-law. In one letter he mentions that he working in the sea port in order to raise some amount of money to send home. John misses his wife and family and writes with longing about returning to his wife often mentions the money he is sending back with each letter or plans to send soon sometimes reports on his business activities urges patience from his wife while he tries to make money and more.<br /> <br /> From his first letter John is not having a pleasant time in Peru. Writing from Lima on February 27 1859 John comments that "I am sorry of having proposed such a thing for this country is very corrupt no moral of no kind in those People.I am afraid to be contaminated with the influence of the wicked." He again bemoans the state of Peru in his next letter from Callao: "I hope the Lord will help me in coming home as soon as I can. I am disgusted with the costume of this country. They are so deprived that I can not be happy in this land but with your advice I will remain till I get some money even if I have to stay longer." John would stay almost two more years in the space of the present letters and his business was not concluded when the present letters end. While in Peru John spends some time "in the House of a friend of my Father" which may indicate John was a native Peruvian or Peruvian-American with roots in the country; reports on the process of the mail and his work in the port of Callao; details his deceased brother's real estate holdings and frequently mentions the difficulty he is having with his brother's widow he reports in one of his two short letters to his aunt that he is in a "Law Suit" with the widow. In one letter John makes it perfectly clear how he sees himself among the people of Peru: "I am tired already of this country. There is nothing but rebolution sic that is the principal business of the Perubians sic. As for my part I am American and I am always with them." The conflict John mentions may be a reference to the Ecuadorian-Peruvian War which took place between 1857 and 1860; this may also help explain why real estate issues inside Peru were difficult to conclude at this time. In his penultimate letter John states that he plans to be back in New York by May 1861 but in his last letter he sadly reports that he must remain in Peru longer in order to conclude his business affairs. unknown

MANIFIESTO DE LAS ACUSACIONES QUE A NOMBRE DEL GENERAL SAN MARTIN HICIERON SUS LEGADOS ANTE EL GOBIERNO DE CHILE CONTRA EL VICE- ALMIRANTE LORD COCHRANE Y VINDICATION DE ESTE DIRIGIDA AL MISMO SAN MARTI
Lima: Imprenta Administrada por J. Antonio Lopez 1823. 4681pp. including errata. Lacks half title. Small quarto. Dbd. Moderate dampstaining. Very good. A scarce Peruvian imprint in which the Earl of Dundonald defends himself against accusations made by his own military commander Gen. José San Martin during the Peruvian war for independence. The first section contains San Martin's allegations against Cochrane followed by the Admiral's refutation of the various charges. Admiral Thomas Cochrane 10th Earl of Dundonald 1775- 1860 fought for South American independence after being dismissed from the British navy. He served as a vice admiral in the Chilean navy and his blockade played an important role in securing Peruvian independence. After helping Chile achieve independence a dispute arose between Cochrane and San Martin over rewards and other spoils of war. It was not the first time nor would it be the last that Cochrane accused those he had served of failing to adequately compensate him. Still he was a brilliant naval officer who was later reinstated into the British navy and served with distinction until his death in 1860. His legendary worldwide naval adventures influenced both C.S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian in their respective Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey series of historical naval fiction.
