‎« L' événement le plus important depuis la création du monde, mis à part l' incarnation et la mort de celui qui l'a créé, est la découverte des Indes » (Lopez de Gomara, dans une lettre adressée à l'empereur Charles Quint). Réimpression de la 2eme édition de la première traduction française de ce récit des conquêtes espagnoles en Amérique. Le traducteur, Martin Fumée, s'en était pris au cosmographe André Thevet et à ses Singularitez de la France Antarctique, farcies de « bourdes », prétendait-il, « non pas forgées par l'autheur, mais par des mariniers, qui luy en comptoient ainsi qu'il récite »... C'est pour pallier ces insuffisances que Fumée aurait décidé de traduire l'ouvrage de Lopez de Gomara, pourtant aussi suspect. En effet, chapelain et secrétaire de Cortès dans les dernières années de la vie de ce dernier, n'ayant jamais voyagé en Amérique, Francisco Lopez de Gomara (1511-1565) recueillit du conquistador le récit de la conquête de Mexico et des « terres neuves ». Son ouvrage, évidemment favorable aux conquistadors, contrairement à celui de Las Casas , eut un succès important qu'attestent les nombreuses éditions en Europe , Charles Quint l’interdit en 1553 .Montaigne s'est servi de cette traduction française pour son chapitre Des Cannibales dans Les Essais . (Sabin, 27747 ; Leclerc, 253. ) Bound in period velum, (General History of the Indies) is a work by Francisco Lopez de Gomara , his first edition was printed in December 1552 in the studio of Agustín Millán in Zaragoza. Very rare edition of the first French translation of the chronicle of Lopez de Gomara (1511-1556) , the author has never been to America, but he took note of all the news which reached Europe, using the rare maps of the conquered territories. Its sources consisted of manuscripts and texts of religious who left for America and of interviews with Cortés whose actions he glorified. This remains the best testimony on the discovery and conquest of the New World.P-16 (12)‎
