ill., ril. Patagonia. Campo de Hielo Sur. Tra Cile e Argentina, a ovest del Fitz Roy, quasi mille metri di granito strapiombante che termina a quota 3128 in un fungo di ghiaccio. Il Cerro Torre, la "montagna impossibile", la "vergine inavvicinabile". II libro racconta la storia di questa vetta dai primi tentativi di scalata all'inizio del secolo scorso, alla controversissima e non ancora acclarata prima ascensione di Cesare Maestri e Toni Egger nel 1959, dalla prima ufficiale di Casimiro Ferrari con Chiappa, Conti e Negri, nel 1974, al successo di Bragg in stile alpino. Senza tralasciare un capitolo dedicato a Werner Herzog, il famoso regista di "Grido di pietra", girato sul Cerro Torre. Come spesso accade quando si parla di Patagonia, la prima parte del libro è dedicata a questa terra meravigliosa ed estrema, in tutti i suoi aspetti, dalle navigazioni di Magellano all'esplorazione dell'entroterra, dalle prime cartografie di De Agostini allo sviluppo del turismo e del trekking. Tom Dauer, avvalendosi anche della preziosa collaborazione di alpinisti e scienziati (Silvia Metzeltin e John Bragg, ad esempio), ha dato vita a una vera enciclopedia sul Cerro Torre.

Tela editoriale con sovraccoperta illustrata (sciupata), cm 17x24, pp 235 (5), veduta fotografica in nero del Sarmiento ripiegata all’antiporta, 4 carte geografiche a colori ripiegate e numerose tavole fotografiche a colori e in nero su carta patinata. Esemplare da studio: internamente completo e ben conservato, completo e privo di annotazioni o difetti su testo e tavole, ma con sovraccoperta molto usurata (strappi, mende in nastro adesivo) e segni d’uso sui piatti. Edizione originale e unica (in italiano, nel 1959 apparve per lo stesso editore quella in spagnolo) dell’ultimo libro del cantore della Terra del Fuoco, Alberto Maria de Agostini. Alpinista ed esploratore, Padre De Agostini tentò senza successo la salita al Sarmiento nel 1913; nel 1956, a 73 anni, il salesiano fu alla guida della spedizione che vide Carlo Mauri e Clemente Maffei raggiungere l’inviolata vetta. L’impresa è qui narrata con abbondanza di fotografie e 4 cartine dei rilievi topografici effettuati dalla spedizione. “Il racconto dell’impresa alpinistica, sotto forma di diario, approfondisce gli aspetti tecnici e organizzativi della spedizione, ed è arricchito da numerose osservazioni geografiche sulla conformazione della Terra del Fuoco e della sua cordigliera e da descrizioni naturalistiche di questa terra affascinante e sconosciuta. Completano l’opera numerosi aneddoti e informazioni sulle popolazioni locali, sulla presenza di immigrati italiani a Ushuaia e sui centri abitati di quest’ultima e di Porvenir.” (Chevallay Granero, p. 69).
