Le chevalier Renaud Desmarchais, navigateur français de la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle commanda à différentes reprises des vaisseaux de la compagnie des Indes. De 1724 à 1726, il visita les côtes de la Guinée et la Guyane, en recueillant des observations et des documents de tout genre, qu'il communiqua ensuite au Père Labat qui put ainsi publier cette édition grâce à ces documents.
