‎Histoire de l'évasion de Christian Britone (Charles Brunier) alias "Johnny King", condamné au bagne de Cayenne. Après son évasion, il s'est enrôlé comme pilote de chasse dans l'escadrille du commando de la République du Mexique où il a prouvé par son courage et ses victoires le mérite d'une mise en liberté couronnée par ses différentes citations et décorations des nations alliées. Charles Brunier a passé 25 ans au bagne de Guyane à Saint-Laurent du Maroni et aux îles du Salut. — "C'est un homme à la destinée romanesque qui vient de mourir. Charles Brunier s'est éteint discrètement dans une clinique vendredi à l'âge de 106 ans. Ce vieil homme, pensionnaire d'une maison de retraite à Domont depuis 13 ans, était-il le vrai Papillon, le bagnard de Cayenne, rendu mondialement célèbre par un livre, puis par un film culte avec Steve McQueen et Dustin Hoffman ? Lui l'affirmait en tout cas, fort de nombreuses preuves, comme ce papillon tatoué sur l'épaule gauche et cette phalange coupée, mais célèbre surtout de la polémique née du livre, sorti en 1969, d'Henri Charrière que de nombreux historiens ont soupçonné d'avoir rassemblé plusieurs biographies de forçats pour créer un seul et unique personnage qui deviendra l'emblème du bagne. Charles Brunier, alias Johnny King lorsqu'il était à Cayenne, a eu une vie étonnante et trépidante. Né à Paris en 1901, il se signale dès l'âge de 17 ans en participant au sein de la marine à la campagne de Syrie. Il sauve la vie d'un officier, participe au sauvetage héroïque d'une unité et reçoit ensuite la croix de guerre. Un tour du monde plus tard, il revient en France et se fait engager comme garçon de ferme dans l'Aube. Il rencontre une prostituée, se bagarre violemment avec son souteneur qu'il blesse d'un coup de couteau. Cet amour maudit l'implique quelque temps plus tard dans le meurtre d'une vieille dame. Le 17 juillet 1923, il est condamné aux travaux forcés à perpétuité et se retrouve au bagne de Cayenne en Guyane française. Il s'évadera plusieurs fois, se fait reprendre, mais finit par réussir son coup. La Seconde Guerre mondiale éclate et Charles Brunier s'engage dans l'aviation au sein du commando Mexique qui opère dans les Caraïbes où il chasse les sous-marins ennemis. Sa vie de soldat l'emmènera jusqu'en Afrique où il est décoré une nouvelle fois. Le 12 juin 1948, le président de la commission des grâces lui accorde la remise totale de sa peine. Rangé, il est embauché à Vincennes (Val-de-Marne) dans une fabrique de produits pharmaceutiques, puis s'installe dans une petite maison à Domont. Ses voisins ignorent tout de son passé. Pour eux, Johnny King est un paisible retraité qui occupe son temps à peaufiner ses maquettes de bateau. Le vieil homme ne fera plus parler de lui jusqu'en 2005 où le ministre du Tourisme, Léon Bertrand, lui rendra visite dans sa maison de retraite. Charles Brunier n'aura qu'un seul regret : il n'a jamais obtenu la réhabilitation qu'il avait demandée en 1967. Il voulait donner « un nom honnête » à la femme qu'il aimait. Il nous avait confié cette phrase en 2005, à l'occasion de ses 104 ans : « Bagnard j'étais, bagnard je resterais jusqu'à mon dernier souffle. » Vendredi dernier, c'est sans doute un des derniers forçats encore en vie qui s'est éteint."
