A rare printed decree by Philip V King of Spain regarding the reconstruction of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago following the earthquake that devastated that city in 1730. Detailed orders concerning the construction and operation of the Casa de Moneda and related matters regarding the processing of gold are also provided. It is noted that the reconstruction of the Santiago mint will ensure that the gold will not need to be sent to Lima for processing as was the case after the earthquake. Dated October 1 1743 the decree was printed in Madrid for distribution to officials in the Council of the Indies and in Santiago. A printed note dated Madrid March 22 1744 at the bottom of the text indicates that the text is a copy of the original which remains with the Secretary of Peru. Not in EUROPEAN AMERICANA. Santiago: Imprenta de la Biblioteca 1826. Five broadsheets approximately 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches each. A few chips and minor paper loss at the corners. Moderately tanned light dampstaining. About very good. Untrimmed. Five early issues of important decrees and documents promulgated by members of the Chilean government published from April 18 to June 7 1826. Chile declared its independence from Spain in 1810 but did not expel all colonial forces from its mainland until 1821 and the last Spanish elements from its island territories until 1826. A Chilean constitution was not established until 1833. These registers therefore provide intriguing documentation of a nascent independent Chilean government after a long period of rebellion and civil war. The documents here consist principally of directives from several government departments including those for war finance foreign relations and the interior.
