THOUGHTS OF HAPPY BOYHOOD
St. John N.B.: J & A. McMillan 1902. Book. Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 12 mo 15 cm. green blind-stamped gilt dec cloth pp. vii 121 frontispiece portrait wear at corners and spine ends hinges cracked but holding covers show some soil a scarce item . John Keough graduated from St. Francis Xavier in 1906. In 1911 he published "Rhymes of a Rover" a book of poetry. One poem "Echoes of St. F.X." takes up fifty three pages of the 223 page book. It is written in heroic couplets in the style of Alexander Pope and is a satire which castigates Dr. Alexander M. Thompson 1898-1906 for his promotion of sports over academics. Others connected with the university also came under his guns. The book was published by J & A McMillan St. John N.B. and caused a great stir at the time. This is also a rare title. J & A. Jaronczyk, Kasia
Lemons
"In the linked stories of Kasia Jaronczyk's Lemons, the lives of Basia and her family are seen through a kaleidoscopic lens that follows them over twenty years from communist Poland, to their new home in Canada, then back to Poland, to make sense of everything that has happened in the interim. A young girl struggles with her awakening sexuality in an environment where corporal punishment and male dominance are the norm, and every man, even a close relative, can be a sexual threat; where absolute obedience is demanded as a sign of love; while on the playground she struggles to find her place a hierarchy of mean, tough, but charismatic girls. Her mother's return creates new conflicts as she fights over inheritance, offers harmful advice to friends, and accuses her daughter-in-law of a crime. Over time, the experiences of Basia and her mother Magda shift and refract the perspectives through which we view how younger and older women, and their relationships, are shaped by cultural and material changes in their lives." 130P/ Book

War Brides: The Stories of the Women Who Left Everything Behind to Follow the Men They Loved
For thousands of young British girls, the influx of Canadian soldiers conscripted to Britain during the Second World War meant throngs of handsome young men. The result was over 48,000 marriages to Canadian soldiers alone, and a mass emigration of British women to North America and around the world in the 1940's. For many brides, the decision to leave their family and home to move to a country thousands of miles away with a man they hardly knew brought forth ensuing happiness. For others, the outcome was much different, and the darker side of the story reveals the infidelity, domestic violence, poverty, alcoholism and divorce that many lived through. War Brides draws on original archival documents, personal correspondence, and key first hand accounts to tell the amazing story of the War Brides in their own words-and shows the love, passion, tragedy and spirit of adventure of thousand of British women. 288p. plates bibliography index Book
