All published, original edition. The most eloquent journal of the Revolution. The pp. 165-172 contain the 'Copie de la lettre écrite par Camille Desmoulins à sa femme. Datée de la prison du Luxembourg' which letter ends with the moving words 'Je vais mourir!'C'est l'oeuvre le plus éloguente qu'ait produit la Révolution, et à coup sûr, avant et depuis, le journalisme n'a rien donné qui puisse lui être comparé' (Hatin).Under attack by the very radical Hébertists for poor attendance at the Convention and for socializing with the wealthy, Desmoulins published the journal as his defense. Perhaps the Terror also offended him because after blasting his assailants, he printed subtle but telling indictments of the Terror and called for clemency. It has also been suggested by many historians that Desmoulins acted to support Danton and his associates who were at the same time attacking the Hébertists and trying to limit the Terror. Thompson, in his two volume study on Robespierre even states that the aim of the journal was not to moderate the gouvernment, but to overthrow it. Whatever the truth may be, the Committee of Public Safety decided to eliminate its political opponents, which included Desmoulins, He was executed on 13 April 1794.

Vivace scena di carattere bellico che si svolge nella marina e sulla costa della baia di St. Jean e che si inquadra nel lungo dissidio tra francesi ed inglesi, durato quasi due secoli, per i diritti di pesca nel mare di Terranova, conservati dalla Francia anche dopo la definitiva attribuzione dell'isola alla Gran Bretagna con il trattato di Utrecht nel 1714. La legenda in calce illustra i movimenti della piccola squadra navale francese accorsa in difesa dei propri battelli da pesca, mentre sulla terraferma, in primo piano, sono raffigurati gli schieramenti delle truppe in assetto di guerra, compresa la batteria di cannoni che spara bordate, a destra.

The Ministerial Crisis: MR. D. B. Viger and His Position: Being a review of the Hon. Mr. Viger's Pamphlet
Kingston ON: Chronicle & Gazette Office 1844. 1st printing. Stapled Wraps. pp. 20. 8vo. An original stitched printed pamphlet. Pages age-toned but otherwise unmarked. Overall in very good condition and a scarce item. Denis-Benjamin Viger 1774-1861 was a 19th-century politician lawyer businessman and Patriote movement member from Lower Canada. He was born in Montreal and his father had represented the Montreal East district in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1796 to 1800. In 1808 Viger married and he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Montreal East in 1808 and 1810 then in Leinster in 1810 and 1814 and in Kent in 1816 1820 1824 and 1827. Prominent in the Patriote movement and denounced as the owner of seditious newspapers Viger was imprisoned in 1838 when martial law was imposed in Lower Canada. He refused to post bail to protest the enforcement of martial law and demanded a regular trial. Consequently he was not released until May 1840. In 1841 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the United Canadas. From December 12 1843 to June 17 1846 he was one of the joint premiers of the Province of Canada. Viger died in Montreal in 1861. When this pamphlet was published Viger was one of the Canada's 'joint' Prime Ministers. There was at that time considerable discontent amongst French Canadians that he had abandoned their interests by acquiescing in the authority of the Governor-General appointed by the British. He sought to defend his actions in pamphlet form which prompted this 'anonymous' response actually written by Francis Hincks 1807-1885. Contemporary marbled calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, red labels with gilt lettering, marbled edges, small damage to front joint of vol. 4. Higgs 4071; INED 12; Sabin 3726; Einaudi 55; Echeverria & Wilkie 767/2; JFBL A32; not in Kress (cf.: 6310); not in Goldsmiths. Second edition, originally published in 1766. In this his principal work Serionne rejected the Physiocratic theories of production and taxation; he also refused to accept the prevailing opinion that the population of France was diminishing rapidly. He strongly believed that the discovery of America had stimulated European agriculture and industry, improving levels of employment and that colonial commerce had itself contributed to an increase in the population of Europe (See: Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus, pp. 315-321). After having run into serious difficulties in France, the author was forced to leave France. This edition with the 'Paris' imprint was apparently destined for export from Holland. - Half-title and first blanks slightly loose at foot in volume one, a very fine copy, with bookplate of G. de Ste Marguerite, very likely belonging to the family of De Bonnet, seigneurs de la Baume, de Saint-Marguerite et de Costefrède.

Circa 1982-83. Perhaps the first book to be written by workers on the question of Canada's entering the second depression. Their dismay at finding another generation of young families faced with the same prospects of unemployment has prompted them to compile an outline of world and national development leading to recurring crises in private enterprise systems. The authors have used a historical materialist approach in attempting to make the history and background of depressions understandable to the average working class reader. Echeverria & Wilkie 789/7; INED 218; no edition in Kress; no edition in Goldsmiths; no edition in Einaudi; not in Sabin. Final edition of this little collection of 102 maxims and reflections forming a perfect abridged statement of the philosophy of the Enlightenment.'Both signatures a and b have had the first leaf of each cancelled; no located copy still has them present' (Echeverria & Wilkie). After the half-title and title the numbering of the prelims is: vii-ix, verso of ix an unnumbered blank page, ix again, verso numbered xii, xv-xxiv. This is a copy with a5r numbered ix (see Echeverria & Wilkie). The dedication is 'A Monsieur B.F. (i.e. Benjamin Franklin). The first edition was published in 1774 and a second one was printed in 1782 in Paris on the press of Benjamin Franklin. Livingston (19) writes: 'It was again printed in 1789, a close copy, typographically, of Franklin's Passy press edition, and this is the only edition recorded in the Catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale (1914).' According to Quérard (I, 175), this edition 'est plus complète que les autres', and he adds 'ce petit traité renferme beaucoup d'idées sur le commerce maritime.' 'Éloge de la famille et du mariage, du travail, de la tolérance. Défense du droit de propriété et de l'impôt foncier. Idées agrariennes sur la population et l'agriculture' (INED). On page 87 these lines on the USA: 'La Pensylvanie est le premier pays policé de l'univers où la tolérance réciproque de tous les cultes religieux ait été garantie par une loi authentique.'The pages 89-90 are omitted in the numbering, page (91)-end contains notes to the various maxims. Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg (1709-1779) was doctor, professor, journalist and businessman: he was Diderot's doctor untill Barbeu died, and he created various commercial companies with the aim to help the American revolutionaries. - Small tear in outer blank margin of the title-page and a few unobtrusive spots, verso title-page and recto last page with strengthened inner margin.

First edition, second issue ('Italic type' as identified by Echeverria & Wilkie) and without the errata on page xxiv and with the errata corrected. Butel-Dumont argues that Great-Britain owes her power and wealth to the colonies. He analyses the commerce and trade as well as the population of the British colonies at the time of the Guerre du Canada. With the outbreak of the Seven Years War, many of whose battles were to be fought in the New World, considerable curiosity about the British colonies was excited. This was one of the books profiting from this curiosity. It emphasized the phenomenal growth and prosperity of the colonies. 'This is the first extensive French text on the British North American colonies and was occasioned by the heightened tensions preceding the Seven Years War. It gives accounts of the geography, history, religion, government, economics, trade, and products of the several colonies' (Echeverria & Wilkie). According to INED this work was also attributed to Véron de Forbonnais. - Tiny hole in half-title and title, modern ex-libris on the front paste-down.

Illustrated with a manuscript plan of the 1899 camp and a map accomplished in red ink and pencil for the 1901 hunt. 174 pp. as described serially in manuscript in an Excelsior Diary ignoring the printed dates approximately 10000 words. 1 vols. Narrow agenda 12mo. An excellent series of accounts of seven three-week deer hunts in Canada late October to mid-November 1897-1902 with names of the members of the hunting parties and a table by hunter of the game bag.<br /> Livermore a resident of Newark Valley New York travelled to Canada each year with a group of friends to hunt deer at a camp near Uffington Ontario; his diaries 20-40 pages for each hunt provide a brief account for each day's activities without much of a narrative thread mostly devoted to the hunting with notes on deer seen shot at and bagged. Also included are extensive notes on transportation to and from the camp other wildlife encountered on the hunt anecdotes e.g. a hound returning to camp with a nose full of porcupine quills some expense accounting and camp life. Livermore and his ten or so comrades most of whom hailed from Ottawa or Toronto bagged an average of 20 deer a year over the six hunts with a high of 30 in 1899 and 1900 the kill including bucks does and fawns rather indiscriminately. <br /> From the 1897 trip: "A.E. Bradstreet shot a fine doe 2-year old in narrows from upper pine near Burnt lake. Called for me to dress it.<br /> 1898: "I went with Mr. Miller North East of camp to a new watch & shot the first deer of the season at 8:30 & a fawn on same morning about 9:30." <br /> 1899: "Paddy Regan killed a very large buck yesterday in Rat lake weighed 240 pounds."<br /> 1900: "Weather very warm went bathing in lake today. Had plenty of fresh fish from lake perch bull heads chubs also some trout."<br /> 1901: "F. Smith shot a fine 5 i.e. 10 pt. buck at head of Jean Lake."<br /> 1902: "I went to pt. between watches on Jean Lake North side at 8:30 just landed I see a small Buck fawn 'fine one' crossing outlet of Jean went after him & made a finish at first watch on Stoney Creek." <br /> Though lacking a narrative thread this is a revealing manuscript giving the day to day details from a series of deer hunting trips to Canada at the turn of the 20th century. The first 60 days of the diary have entries in real time mostly devoted to Livernore's day job as a clerk in a shoe store and for example an 1892 visit to New York City; the manuscript is quite legible and very good throughout. unknown

Montreal: William Notman ca. 1870. Original cabinet card show a member of the Canadian Rifle Regiment in different poses. On William Notman mount with his gilt signage on the verso. Very good.The Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment came into being in 1840. The Colonel-in-Chief was Governor-General of Canada and its strength was 1078. The unit remained active until 1871 when the bulk of British troops left Canada.William Notman was born in Scotland but moved to Montreal and established himself as a photographer as early as 1856. "The first Canadian photographer with an international reputation Notman's status and business grew over the next three decades. He established branches throughout Canada and the United States including seasonal branches at Yale and Harvard universities to cater to the student trade. Notman was also an active member of the Montreal artistic community opening his studio for exhibitions by local painters; the studio also provided training for aspiring photographers and painters. Notman was highly regarded by his colleagues for his innovative photography and held patents for some of the techniques he developed to recreate winter within the studio walls.
