Edition published in the same year as the first edition. Butel-Dumont argues that Great-Britain owes her power and wealth to the colonies. He analyses the commerce and trade as well as the population of the British colonies at the time of the Guerre du Canada. With the outbreak of the Seven Years War, many of whose battles were to be fought in the New World, considerable curiosity about the British colonies was excited. This was one of the books profiting from this curiosity. It emphasized the phenomenal growth and prosperity of the colonies. 'This is the first extensive French text on the British North American colonies and was occasioned by the heightened tensions preceding the Seven Years War. It gives accounts of the geography, history, religion, government, economics, trade, and products of the several colonies' (Echeverria & Wilkie). The scarce first edition of this little-known work by Crèvecoeur, which was not translated into English until the 1960s. It is of course not a translation but an original work by Crèvecoeur. Crèvecoeur was of noble birth and first came to America in 1754. He served in Canada during the Seven Years' War, travelled widely throughout the Great Lakes and Ohio regions and American colonies, and finally settled on a farm near the frontier in Orange County, NY. He became an American citizen in 1764, and he served as French consul in New York from 1783 to 1790. His "letters of an American Farmer," published in English in 1782, made him an instant celebrity in Europe and the book was the first best-seller by an American author in Europe."Crèvecoeur spent nearly a quarter of a century in America, saw Washington, in 1774, come to the first Congress fresh from his farm, witnessed his extraordinary career, and, in 1797, saw him retire to the private life of an agriculturist. His experience, therefore, enables him to give much information and personal gossip not readily found elsewhere. (.....) This work is distinguished by its details on the aboriginal tribes, and their gradual disappearance. Mazzei was an Italian physician who practised medicine in Smyrna and later, from 1755 to 1773, engaged in commerce in London. With several other Italians he came to the United States in December, 1773, to introduce the cultivation of the grape and the olive. He became a neighbor and friend of Thomas Jefferson. He actively supported the movement for independence and from 1779 to 1783 he was an agent for Virginia to obtain supplies in Italy. His Memorie della vita (Lugano, 2 volumes, 1845-1846) contains a lengthy account of his activities in Italy on behalf of Virginia (Monaghan, op.cit.) In the above work he was assisted by Condorcet who is the 'Bourgeois de New-Haven.' Birckbeck purchased 6.000 acres of land on English Prairie, Illinois, in 1816, founding thereon the city of New Albion. The author did much to inspire and direct British emigrants into that area. The French translator considers the wealth of information supplied also of great interest for French people who might wish to emigrate to the United States. The work includes a wealth of information on economic and social conditions in that part of the United States. - One leaf (pp. 63/64) neatly repaired, without loss of text, and some small loss of paper in outer blank margin of half-title and title.

This publication is one in a group which was typical of revived French-American fraternity in the early 19th century, dwelling on the similarities between the American and the French revolution, comparing Napoleon with Washington, and the struggle against the English. The work was therefore dedicated to Napoleon while the authors were careful to explain that American Liberty meant respect for the law, not license, and that the doctrine of the social contract and the principle of equality were not to be misinterpreted as signifying pure democracy or an unrestricted franchise (see at length: Echeverria, Mirage in the West, p. 255). Only after 1804 and the coronation of the Emperor, parallels between Washington and Napoleon were no longer politically desirable.

John Tallis 7 November 1817 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". Jackson 2 pages on smaller note-size sheets concerning some lands in which he had an interest - back payments taxes; on Jan. 11th larger paper 1 page the same property is being discussed naming other parties - of Oldrich Blanchard and a Mrs. Long - there was a 'consideration' of $ 10000.00 mentioned at the close; January 22 asking Jackson to communicate as Hurlburt is traveling - he is trying to wind up the legalities of the lands concerned; with a 1873 short note written to Jackson on the letterhead of David Dall Vessel Agent 241 South Water Street Chicago asking for his fees due for freight on a schooner signed by Dall; light wear old fold lines; in very good condition. According to the C.S.R. Line letterhead it was the "Only Route Through Canada Under American Management." At this point in its history the Vanderbilt family exercised control over this rail line. Photograph album with over 100 snapshots from a family's visit to these locations a very few of which are identified or dated on the photos: circa 40 photos of Cape Cod & Nantucket locations with some of the island buildings identified. About 30 photo views from Canada including Nova Scotia locales & Quebec. Also included are a few miscellaneous views of New Hampshire mountains including 2 real-photo postcards. The balance of the images including some loose photographs laid-in taken during the same time period and usually family outing & personal portrait images. Photos average about 3" x 4 3/4" some smaller some larger. These are tipped-in via standard corner-mounts to black paper album pages approx. 10 1/4" x 13 1/2" size contained in a chipped and worn Kork-Craft Products binding. With a large woodcut Jesuit device on the title page woodcut initial and a factotum built up from fleurons. There is a neatly written contemporary inscription of a Roman Jesuit library on the title page; some leaves foxed or lightly browned; there is a minor ink stain on two leaves. In all a nice genuine copy with generous margins. FIRST EDITION of one of the most important eyewitness accounts of 17th-century Canada devoted primarily to the Huron Indians but also with accounts of other groups including the Jesuit author’s captivity and mutilation under the Iroquois. He also devotes 25 pages to a 1643 letter written by his Jesuit colleague Isaac Jogues 1607-1646 who was killed by the Mohawks. Bressani 1612-1672 an Italian Jesuit travelled to Canada as a missionary in 1642. After two years in Quebec and with the Algonquins on the St. Lawrence River he set off for the most distant outposts the missions on Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay deep in the interior. He was captured by the Iroquois who cut off his fingers and eventually sold him to the Dutch who helped him reach France. He returned to Canada in 1645 participated in peace talks with the Iroquois and finally reached the Huron missions where he remained until the Iroquois destroyed them in 1649 killing most of the Hurons and missionaries. On his return to Europe in 1650 he wrote the present Italian account. A riveting eyewitness account of Canadian Indians and Jesuits in the 1640s.
