‎SMALL ARCHIVE OF PHOTOGRAPHS MAPS BUSINESS AGREEMENTS AND A LETTER RELATING TO THE ACTIVITIES OF THE CHICKALOON COAL MINING COMPANY OF ALASKA‎

‎Various places in Alaska & California 1920. Includes one large colored folding map 20 x 40 inches; three folding blueprint maps two of them 13 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches the third 9 1/4 x 13 inches; a folding cross- section; four photographs three of them 3 1/4 x 5 inches mounted to card - one a cyanotype; three folding printed legal documents; a 2pp. typed letter signed to the manager of the company; and a pamphlet on coal mining see below. Large map with stains in margins small areas of separation at cross-folds. Other items with light wear. Overall very good. An interesting archive relating to the early operations of the Chickaloon Coal Company of Chickaloon Alaska. Chickaloon located some seventy-five miles up the Matanuska River from Anchorage remains an area of interest to those who would mine coal there. The company was founded in 1917 by a Californian who leased the land for his mines from the federal government. The collection documents the formation of the company and its capitalization and includes maps of the area. The largest of the maps is a USGS "Topographical Map of Lower Matanuska Valley Alaska" dated 1918 and based on surveys done in 1909 and 1913. The location of the "Anthracite Ridge" is printed on the maps and lots 10 11 and 12 of the Chickaloon Coal Company are highlighted in red ink as are a couple other areas of concern to the company. The two larger blueprint maps show the progress of prospecting in Leasing Unit No. 11 one of them corrected to April 7 1918 the other to June 1 1918 with shading showing the work done in various months. The smaller blueprint map dated June 13 1918 shows the proposed wagon road from Chickaloon to King River. The cross- section shows the "folding of measures" in the Chickaloon area. The three printed legal documents were all executed in California. The earliest is dated 1917 and early 1918 being an indenture describing the actions of Lars Netland of Oakland and his wife in leasing coal land in Alaska from the U.S. government. The second document dated Feb. 15 1918 records the loan of $4000 by M.J. Fontana to the Chickaloon Coal Company in return for stock in the company. The third document dated ten days later pertains to the issuance of shares in the company. Fontana is the largest shareholder by far followed by Lars Netland A.L. Brizzolara and W.A. Gompertz the manager of the company. The photographs show an outcrop of coal disclosed by railway cuttings and three others that show a ship one of the pictures a cyanotype. The typed letter is dated June 27 1918 and is addressed to W.A. Gompertz manager of the company. The subject is the drilling process and different techniques locations and angles that might work including the use of diamond drill bits. Also included is a copy of a 1920 government-issued pamphlet entitled MINING IN THE MATANUSKA COAL FIELD AND THE WILLOW CREEK DISTRICT ALASKA by Theodore Chapin which discusses the work of the Chickaloon mining company. unknown‎

Leaves brittle corners chipped with mounted images clean and crisp. Pictorial work with mounted images of Alaskan natives taken by the photography firm of Winter & Pond in Juneau. Lloyd Valentine Winter 1866-1945 and Edwin Percy Pond 1872-1943 arrived in Juneau in 1893 establishing a curio and photography shop there. By 1896 they were advertising a catalog of photographs for sale. They documented the local natives the Klondike Gold Rush and life in Alaska producing many popular images of the region. The company existed for over fifty years operating under original ownership until 1945 and finally closing in 1956.

The images here are all of local native tribes including several of the Tlingit people. However these images by Cantwell show a wayside station and freight piled nearby horse & mule teams drawing sleds next to canvas tented cabins and finally a whole pack train strung out along a ridge at the top of the Pass. One of the photos shows a four-horse team freight wagon drawing several passengers swaddled in furs probably for the Orr Stage Company along with an additional image of a four-horse team sleigh with lettering on the side for the Ed. S. Orr & Co. Fairbanks - Valdes Carriage sleigh with passengers swathed in furs and freight tied to the back. The Orr Stage Co. was one of the first businesses to carry passengers and freight over the Valdez-Fairbanks Trail and set up roadhouse stations along the trail with travelers changed from six-horse stages to double-ender sleds pulled over the Isabel Pass. Two more images show freight wagon and sleds through the Teikhell Tiekel River Canyon in winter with snow piles and rugged terrain. Cantwell 1869-1948 was a Puyallup WA photographer who by 1898 was working with E.A. Hegg working on the S.S. Columbia on the Yukon River as photographer in 1901 partnered with Atwood taking Alaskan mining photos photos of freighters packers up the Chilkoot Pass and even series of underground flashlight photos. After 1910 he leaves Valdez moves back to Kapowsin WA and later becomes a taxidermist in Los Angeles for the Natural History Museum. These images are not present in George G. Cantwell Photograph Collection 1898-1910 Univ. of Washington Special Collections PH0298; See: Black Rapids Roadhouse Orr Stage Company Alaskan Roadhouses 2020. ‎ALASKA CAPTAIN JAMES COOK'S VOYAGES WITH MAP OF ALASKABEFORE IT WAS ALASKA Webber John illustrations after.‎

‎The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure. 1784 July through December.‎

‎London.: William Bent. 1784. Half-leather bound volume 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches; 336 pp. plus Supplement pp. 337-383 and 4 pp. index. Engraved bookplate by I.C. Berndt. Leather spine perished; abrasions to corners and boards; boards loose but holding; title page and first page of July number detached; sheets are uniformly time toned wove paper. Volume contains 15 engraved plates including 7 relating to Cook's Voyages plus a folding map "Chart of the N.W. Coast of America and NE Coast of Asia" 10 1/2 x 18 inches. The map has overall toning minor separations at fold intersections and a 1 inch tear entering image at left margin. Musty aroma to the volume. The Universal Magazine published in serial form the account of Captain Cook's voyage to the Northern Hemisphere. A note in the July number states the account continues from the June Supplement. The narrative in the present volume continues through the death of Cook. Of particular note is the "Chart of the N.W. Coast of America and N.E. Coast of Asia. Explored by Capt. Cook and Capt. Clerke in the Years 1778 & 1779." The map is a smaller uncolored and abbreviated version 50 degrees north and above of the map published by William Faden in 1784 showing the detailed mapping of what was to become the American state of Alaska. Plates relating to the voyage are King and Woman of the Friendly Islands; Two Women of Otaheite; a Morai in Atooi; Man and Woman of Nootka Sound; Man and Woman of Prince Williams Sound; Man and Woman of Oonalashka; and a portrait of Cook. All but the portrait of Cook and the Morai plate are double images. The volume also includes a portrait of "Dr. Samuel Johnson" in recognition of "Memoirs of the Life and Writings of the Late Dr. Samuel Johnson." Of further interest is an illustrated account of the first manned balloon flight in England "Mr. Lunardi's Aerial Voyage" an "inflammable air balloon" fitted with oars from London to Hertfordshire on which Lunardi had for companions "a dog a cat and two pigeons." The volume contains much of interest with content pertaining to literature exploration and a landmark in the history of flight. The volume would merit rehabilitation. . William Bent. hardcover‎
