The cloth is splitting at the front hinge near the headcap and there is a tear in the cloth on the spine near the foot. The rear inner hinge is heavily cracked and holding by the webbing. Ink stamps and labels on the endpapers. Early owner's inscription on the front flyleaf "S. T. Cherry / Tarboro / Edgecombe County N.C. / April 1st 1887". 20th century notations written on the front pastedown and flyleaf. Library ink stamps on the endpapers and the title page. Frontis is foxed. The text block is generally sound but a couple of gatherings are slightly sprung. Text is toned and there are some markings in the Preface. Corners lightly bumped very slight scattered foxing nineteenth-century ink stamp of H.J. Jones and penciled signature of Samuel Jones on front free endpaper; very good or better. According to the Preface this collection was commissioned by the American Anti-Slavery Society for use by "those who have been accustomed to meet to pray for the Emancipation of the Slave." Hatfield a Presbyterian minister and student of hymns selected and liberally edited 291 hymns songs and poems--including three credited to John Greenlead Whittier--and organized them thematically into sections titled "The Cause of the Slave" "The Slave Comforted" "The Slave Exhorted to Patience and Hope" "The Rights of the Slave" "Appeals in Behalf of the Slave" subdivided into appeals to masters freemen women and Christian "Slaveholders Admonished" "The Friends of the Slave Encouraged" "The Friends of the Slave Assembled" and "Emancipation." As scholar Cheryl C. Boots argues Freedom's Lyre stands out from the hundreds of collections of hymns published in the nineteenth century because the performance of these hymns "helped connect their secular cause with a sacred one" and "functioned within the ranks of the abolitionists as a commonly held language of identity and protest that engaged singers' emotions as it affirmed the humanity of blacks" Singing for Equality the American Antislavery and Indian Rights Movements 1640-1855. An interesting association copy for the half-title page is inscribed large and bold in black fineline: "From / Phil Drell / For / Archie Lieberman." Drell was a noted Chicago photographer who as a Jewish soldier in the U.S. Army Motion Picture Coverage Unit documented the Nazi death camp horrors shortly after the war; he also covered D-Day and the liberation of Paris. Raleigh: Printed and Sold by J. Gales and Son 1823. 1st Edition . Leather Bound. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavos. vi 526 1; iv 671; 4-635; vii 437 pages. Each volume indexed. Hardcovers bound in full leather. The bindings are worn and show heavy scuffing and abrasions. Hinges are splitting on Volumes I & II and are heavily rubbed on Volume II. There are later paper labels on the spines numbered Vol. 8 on Vol I through Vol. 11 Vol. IV. The text blocks are secure. Volume III lacks the Title page and the Names of Cases leaf at the front although they appear to have never been bound in. Heavy foxing to the text throughout. Volume I has three lines of wear grooves on the top edge of the text block. Volume I has the signatures of Charles G. Spaight and W. C. Bowen. Spaight graduated UNC in 1820 son of NC Gov. Richard Dobbs Spaight. Charles died in 1831 before taking his seat in the NC House of Commons. Volume II contains the same two signature and a pencil signature of "Edward Conigland" Conigland 1819-1877 was a lawyer teacher and writer who was born in Ireland but who moved to North Carolina in 1844. He represented Halifax County at the 1865 NC Constitutional Convention and he served as defense council to Governor William Holden at his Impeachment trial in 1871. Volume III contains a signature of "W. W. Peebles Jackson N.C." Peebles was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly delegate from Northampton County in the session of 1860-61 when North Carolina voted to secede from the Union. Volume IV has the signatures of W. W. Peebles dated 1866 and E. Wilkins with an ink stamp of Edmund Wilkins. <br/> <br/> Printed and Sold by J. Gales and Son hardcover
