The book contains a series of newspaper articles regarding the unincorporated town of New Idria and about the mercury mine that was the basis for the town and covers the town from birth to death. "The community was established to support the mine which mainly extracted mercury since cinnabar was abundant in the local rock formations. Mercury mining at the location began in 1854. At one time the New Idria mines were America's second most productive mines with the New Almaden mines in the vicinity of San Jose about 82 miles 132 km northwest being the first. The discovery of mercury ore at New Idria came soon after the discovery of gold in the Sierra foothills which began the California gold rush. At that time mercury was important in extracting gold from gold ore. 1873. Original manuscript. Hardcover. 48pp of handwritten sentiments from friends and family; four engraved plates tissue guards title-page vignette. Bound in red morocco blind-stamped decorations chrome-litho floral pieces on both covers gilt cover lettering and spine decorations all edges gilt. 8.25" x 6.5". Pieces of spine covering chipped from both ends; internally in very good condition. Many of the entires in this album were written at Tiskilwa Mt. Carroll and Rochelle all in Illinois and a few others are from Boston Orange NJ and St. Louis. Most are in ink a few in fading but readable pencil. Several contain richly calligraphed phrases or titles within their text while one woman offers three animal sketches 2 dogs and a buck. Some of the non-calligraphic hands are nevertheless beautiful and flowing illustrating the importance of penmanship in the school curricula of the day. Many entries contain short poems and some of these appear to be original since they mention “Mary†or “my sister†etc. ~~ Mary's album documents the prevailing sentiments of the era with inspirational messages on the importance of living a Christian life trusting in God/Jesus etc. Only a few are of the “remember me†variety. Some writings take up a full page including those of her father William R. Webb and her mother both religious. There are also entries by her father-in-law B. Lichty who signs with “Bless you is the prayer of your unworthy father†and by her sister Ada. One signer Will P. Hallett of Mt. Carroll writes that he’s signing the book “although I have not as yet formed your acquaintance†and goes on to hope that if they don’t meet “in this sinful world may God help us to meet around his throne….†An entry from Mrs. C.B. Boyer notes that “One year ago you came to us as a stranger and today you leave for your new home.†and concludes with sending her good wishes. The only signer of historical note seems to be Joseph Morris Ray who signed as “your friend†in June 1873 and later became an Iowa attorney and State Senator 1893-95 after residing in Mt. Carroll for many years. hardcover

Third and most complete edition of this work "in which form it was the most informative compilation on the West at the end of the 18th century" Streeter. 8vo xii 598 pp index in modern leather binding with new modern endpapers and flyleaves with four folding maps -- three original and one in a nicely made facsimile. The three original maps are: A Map of The Western Part of the Territories belonging to the United States of America with splits small losses archival repairs to verso; A Plan of the Rapids of the Ohio; and A Map of the Tennassee sic Government Formerly Part of North Carolina. The facsimile is A Map of the State of Kentucky from Actual Survey by Elihu Barker of Philadelphia. The most important eighteenth-century guide to the Trans-Allegheny region. Imlay was a surveyor and land speculator in Kentucky and the first part of this book and the entirety of the first edition consists of a series of descriptive letters designed to attract settlers to the interior. This is followed by Filson's important work on the history of Kentucky Boone's autobiographical account and other valuable material including Thomas Jefferson's 1791 "Report of the Secretary of State.of the Quantity and Situation of the Lands not Claimed by the Indians." Afton I.T.: Jeremiah Hubbard 1894. First Edition. Softcover. Fine. 4pp printed in a small and legible typeface. Self-wrappers. 9" x 6". The first 2-3/4 pages recount Quaker missionary Hubbard's train trip with his wife and young son from Afton I.T. to Oakland California including a visit to the Midwinter Fair in the Bay Area. The route led from Afton through Peirce City Missouri then on to Burrton Kansas and then via Santa Fe to California. He tells of an encounter with Pueblo Indians in Arizona; of landing at 16th Street in Oakland; of preaching at Friends Meetings; &c. Of the Mid-Winter Fair he states: ".in many respects it outstripped the World's Fair Columbian Exposition. Here we had the privilege of visiting the village of Honolulu and saw the natives in their costumes.of seeing the South Sea Islanders.people from Ceylon.visiting Cairo street in the fair grounds where the Jews have a fine display." They travel to Golden Gate Cliff House the Florence Mission at San Jose; visit with a "Christian Chinaman" in his store at Oakland; take in the Salvation Army's Home of Peace a rescue home for friendless girls. In Chinatown ".we were in one of their Joss Houses where they go to worship their idols.It was a privilege to visit the deaf and dumb and blind asylums here at Berkeley." The remaining text of the issue contains items of local interest in the Afton I.T. area. Afton Indian Territory became Ottawa County Oklahoma.
