Concord NH: Daniel Cooledge 1813. Hardcover. Very good. Third edition first published 1809. 16mo 143 pp with wonderful wood-engraved sheep vignette on title page. Contemporary binding of calf-backed marbled boards with black spine label. Bookplate of Catholic priest and book collector Joseph M. Gleason on front pastedown. Five-digit number ink-stamped on verso of title page and some other faint markings on the same page suggest this may once have been in a library but there are no other indications. Some scuffing to the spine but overall quite a nice copy with tight binding and minimal foxing. Livingston is best known as a politician he represented New York in the Continental Congress became Congress's first secretary of foreign affairs and then minister plenipotentiary to France under Jefferson but he "maintained a lifelong involvement in agricultural experimentation and other amateur though serious "projecting" applying his innovations in farming and Merino sheep culture to his extensive acreage. Known throughout the Anglo-American world for his projects in 1793 Livingston founded with others the New York Society for the Promotion of Agriculture Manufactures and the Useful Arts" ANB. The Confederate Scrap-Book was published for the benefit of the Memorial Bazaar held in Richmond Virginia April 11 1893. Contains Confederate Patriotic Songs and Poetry as well as General Lee's Farewell Address to his Army. Many articles of praise and inspirational articles about the Confederacy. 255 pages. No pictures or illustrations. Book is amazingly tightly bound with one small break in front end papers but hinge is still strong rear hinge is whole. Wear to cloth over boards but no breaks to cloth. Heel and head of front and rear panels has exposed boards on corners. Moderate soiling and lost of color to cloth on spine in spots. Gilt on front panel is all present all with stripe of stars in red. No foxing page edges are dyed red. Nice sturdy copy of the first edition. 1851. Manuscript. Very Good. folio 2 pages on four page bi-folium old colds and creases remains of wafer postal markings and some soiling on integral address leaf else in very good clean legible condition. Lloyd in this letter writes his uncle asking for funds and is unable to find other employment. Lloyd had apparently been working for Rufus W. Bailey the American Colonization Society Agent in Virginia. Lloyd writes: "I hardly know how to begin writing but I am situated so that I cannot move at all. I have tried to get a situation here in place of the place but unsuccessfully and all because I am not a good writer & Bookkeeper. I feel very anxious indeed to get back to New York but Mr. Baily has no money to pay my expenses back and can not let me have it for 6 or 8 weeks. He is about sending a Ship of Emigrants to Liberia and is getting them down the Vally sic as fast as possible but they will not be ready to sail before October 1st. He then expects to have $ 1000 at last and more if he sends over 100 emigrants. He is obliged to pay all their expenses until they go and told me yesterday he could not possibly let me have a dollar until his ship has sailed." During the Liberian emigrant voyage discussed in this letter which sailed November 1 1851 on the Morgan Dix approximately 37 of the 149 passengers died on board ship or during the acclimation period in Africa. <br /> books

The bulletin is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The bulletin covers have noticeable toning. There is a small tear to the top edge of the front cover. The text pages are generally clean and bright. The rear cover of the bulletin have penciled notations. The map at the rear of the book is in Very Good- condition with noticeable toning and one tear to the crease about 1/1/2 inches long . "Kino opposed the slavery and compulsory hard labor in the silver mines that the Spaniards forced on the native people. This also caused great controversy among his co-missionaries many of whom acted according to the laws imposed by Spain on their territory. Kino was also a writer authoring books on religion astronomy and cartography. He built missions extending from the present day states of Mexican Sonora northeast for 150 miles 240 km into present-day Arizona where the San Xavier del Bac mission near Tucson a popular National Historic Landmark is still a functioning Franciscan parish church. Kino constructed nineteen rancherías villages which supplied cattle to new settlements. No soiling or marking to the interior of the book. 186 pp. with index and appendix. Book contains sketches of seven families that lived in the Okefenokee Swamp from the 1850's to the 1930s.
