<p>Richmond: Commonwealth of Virginia 1843. Original document appointing Charles Callaghan to the position of Sheriff for Alleghany County Virginia. It is dated November 30 1843 and SIGNED in blue ink by James McDowell 1795-1851. Beginning in 1831 McDowell was elected to several non-consecutive terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. He served as Governor from 1843 to 1846 and later was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives. Even while governor of a slave state and a slaveholder himself he was an advocate for gradual emancipation of slaves admitting California as a free state and public education. While in the Virginia House of delegates McDowell offered a bill to create Virginia Military Institute and he later became a member of VMI's first Board of Visitors. The document is in very good condition: clean and bright with 3 horizontal fold creases light toning a hint of edgewear and one small area of soiling on the verso. The official Seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia is still affixed to the document and the redness of the medallion is still visible under the faded exterior. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. There is a previous owner's address label on the front pastedown page underneath which is the advertisement by the author of the poem. This thin book of poetry was most likely issued as a fundraiser for the first Presbyterian church erected in Los Gatos California. Mr. McGrew was an "ardent Presbyterian and elder in the Santa Clara Church" who helped organize and raise funds for a church to be built in Los Gatos. Not only did he help to organize the interested parties and work on committees he was instrumental in procuring and installing the church bell. From the church history pages on line - "The church bell was procured by subscription primarily through the efforts of Mr. G. W. McGrew and was installed in the belfrey." from the Church website . Signed by the author on the front free endpaper with added inscription noting that he died in January 1978. The author's obituary from the Evening Bulletin is taped to the front fixed endpaper. With 2 pieces of photocopied correspondence from John B. Hannum to Margaret Hileman daughter of Leo H. McKay thanking her for the gift of this book one taped to the half title page the other loose. John B. Hannum 1915-2007 was a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1991. Leo H. McKay was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer County Pa. from 1954 to 1968. In this book he discusses 12 trials of particular interest during his time on that bench. Scarce. Book is in Very Good Condition: provenance-related items described above; underlining in preliminary pages; otherwise clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Good Condition: chipping at ends of spine; closed 3-cm. tear from lower edge of front section and closed 2-cm. tear from upper edge of front section both with interior repair; clean and bright.
