Octavos half brown calf blue marbled boards edges and endpapers; vol. 1 rebacked retaining original back and leather labels scuffing and wear to other spines corners worn. <br/><br/>Wilkes' expedition was the first American scientific exploring expedition by sea voyage. His six ships sailed south around South America along Antarctica causing Wilkes to decide that Antarctica was indeed a separate continent. Other stops were at the Pacific islands of Tahiti the Samoas Australia and New Zealand. This is a presentation copy signed by the author and inscribed to John Wolter Chief of the Map and Geography Division Library of Congress from 1978-1991. Many of the map reproductions are credited to the Library of Congress. This is the preferred second printing of the book with additions corrections index and bibliography that are not in the first printing. This is a very thick heavy oversized volume that may require extra shipping charges depending on destination. It is a detailed history of Dubuque Iowa with chapters on Indians mining the lead rush politics and the Civil War railways and Mississippi River steamboats life during the Great Depression John Deere's Dubuque works etc. Lavishly illustrated with full-color pictorial endpapers dozens of old maps and hundreds of vintage prints portraits and photographs. Wilkinson was a high ranking officer in the Revolutionary War War of 1812 and Governor of the Louisiana Territory. He drank used opium and had a checkered career. He was involved in the Conway Cabal against George Washington and the Burrs Conspiracy against Jefferson. He was unsuccessfully court-martialed. In addition to these topics his Memoirs contain much material on his activities in New York State. Published Philadelphia: Abraham Small 1816 Large 8vo's. 6" x 9 1/2" Vol 1: 855pp. 3 facsimiles 7 folding tables 32pp. appendix 2pp. errata; Vol 2: 578pp. plus 260pp. appendix ; Vol 3: 496pp. appendix 2 folding tabs.
