Gowen, Franklin Benjamin
Argument of Mr. Franklin B. Gowen Before the Committee on Railroads of the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania: Upon the Bill Presented by Mr. Hulings of Venango County to Prevent Unjust Discrimination by Railroad Companies delivered in the Hall of the House of Representatives Harrisburg February 13th 1883
Philadelphia: Allen Lane & Scott's Printing House 1883. Pamphlet. Very Good -. 32 p.; 23 cm. Brown wrapper printed in black. Franklin Benjamin Gowen 1836-1889 served as president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad from 1870 to 1884 and again briefly in 1886. During his presidency he was responsible for the railroad illegally running its own mining operations and for violent and indiscriminate attacks on the Molly Maguires and mineworkers in general. In this speech Gowen argued against aspects of a bill to control railroad freight discrimination proposed by Willis James Hulings 1850-1924 representative from Venango County in the Pennsylvania legislature. The text of the bill in included here; it was enacted. Scarce. In Very Good- Condition: minor loss over lower spine; wrapper lightly soiled; dampstain at lower edge of final 3 leaves and back wrapper; one vertical creased throughout; otherwise clean and solid.
