London: C. Kegan Paul & Co. 1880. Original parchment binding with handsome decorations in blue. Light cover soil. Parchment is chipped away at one corner of the rear cover else Very Good condition. Mrs. Greenough dedicates this book: "To my husband. American sculptor Richard Saltonstall Greenough 1819-1904 suggested by his statue of Mary Magdalene at the tomb." INSCRIBED in 1883 to "Mrs. Dawson with the affectionate regard of the writer." We are confident that the "Mrs. Dawson" referred to is Sarah Ida Fowler Morgan Dawson 1842-1909 best remembered for her book: A Confederate Girl's Diary The Civil War Diary of Sarah Morgan 1913. Sarah's husband was Francis Warrington Dawson editor of the Charleston South Carolina News and Courier. This copy of Mary Magdalene was purchased in a lot that contained numerous books signed by members of the Dawson family or with their bookplate. On the front endpaper is a monogram with the letters W and D intertwined possibly the initials of Sarah's husband or perhaps her son Warrington Dawson 1878-1962. The story goes that Sarah almost destroyed her diary out of anger at a northern "Gentleman" who commented that a southern girl could not have written it so well. It was her son Warrington who saved the dairy wrote the introduction and arranged for its publication in 1913. Sticker on the rear pastedown states: Bound by Burn & Co. . INSCRIBED by the AUTHOR. From the collection of Joseph Hyde Pratt his ownership signature front end page. Pratt was a noted North Carolina geologist conservationist state and civic leader and WWI hero. <p>Richmond: Commonwealth of Virginia 1842. Original document reappointing John Davis to the position of Sheriff for Mecklenburg County Virginia. It is dated November 29 1842 and SIGNED in black ink by Acting Governor John Munford Gregory 1804-1887. The document is in very good condition: clean and bright with 3 vertical fold creases light toning and several 1/8" closed edge tears. The official Seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia is still affixed to the document and the redness of the medallion is still visible under the faded exterior. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Two volumes. Portrait photogravure frontis in both volumes. XLib from the Altland Historical Library. Presented to the library by Mr. Olto Gresham as a Memorial to his father, Hon. Walter Q. Gresham. Inked signature of Edgar A. Altland in both volumes. Sm. 4to. Original full green cloth bindings. Remnants of Library call numbers on spine. Hardbound set. First edition of this useful and scarce biography. In 1860, Gresham was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives, with the start of the Civil War he secured a commission in the 38th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He then was promoted to Colonel and given command of the 53rd Indiana Regiment. He and the 53rd were sent to join General Ulysses S. Grant's army. He fought at Corinth; through the Mississippi operations and the fall of Vicksburg; at Kenesaw Mountain, and Leggett's Hill, where he was wounded by a Sharpshooter By the end of the Civil War, he had attained the rank of Major General. Gresham became a federal judge and served as a member of three presidential cabinets. Under President Chester Arthur, Gresham was Postmaster General and Secretary of the Treasury. In 1892, he was named Secretary of State by President Grover Cleveland. He served in that position until his death in 1895. Very good. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SHELF W27
