‎274p. Illustrated. Tall 8vo. Harcover. Very Good+. The first edition of this interesting account of a little known Civil War engagement before Gettysburg. Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate cavalry, was riding north to get around the Union army. It met and attacked a Federal cavalry regiment, driving it through the streets of Hanover. Brig. Gen. Elon Farnsworth's brigade arrived and counterattacked, routing the Confederate vanguard and nearly capturing Stuart himself. Stuart soon counterattacked. Reinforced by Brig. Gen. George A. Custer's Michigan Brigade, Farnsworth held his ground, and a stalemate ensued. Stuart was forced to continue north and east to get around the Union cavalry, further delaying his attempt to rejoin Robert E. Lee's army, which was then concentrating west of Gettysburg. ‎Hapde, Jean-Baptiste-Auguste‎

‎Beautés de l'Histoire d'Amérique d'après les plus celèbres voyageurs et géographes qui ont écrit sur cette partie du monde par G ornées de 32 nouveaux sujets de gravures représentant les Costumes Habitations Animaux &c. SIGNED BY AUTHOR & PUBLISHER‎

‎Paris: D'Alexis Eymery 1816 Paris: D'Alexis Eymery 1816. First edition. Leather spine with 5 compartments decorated ridges and compartments in dark brown and gold gold titles. Marble boards marble endpapers all edges marble. 312 pp. Engraved frontispiece of explorers who discovered the "New World". Decorated title page. 12 additional engravings of indigenous peoples on 6 pages.A number of engravings have been cut out. A most unusual book signed by both the author and the publisher. Amusing publisher's signature on verso of half title with printed inscription: "Chaque exemplaire doit être revêtu de ma signature. - Je poursuivrai les contrefacteurs. signed A. Eymery Author's signature on last page: "Fait par moi Hapde Auguste" emphatic script. The book also has typos corrected in ink with the same pen and some computations on rear endpaper; this appears to have been the author's copy -- we wonder if he was calculating his profits on the rear. The book has interesting naive engravings of indigenous peoples including Greenlanders Eskimo Louisiana Florida and California natives and Mexicans. Light wear at spine edge corners bumped light foxing. Text and images entirely readable text block and hinges solid. Some contemporary scribbles on the title page from the same pen as the author. Very good condition. Scarce in any condition rarer still with the signatures of both author and publisher. D'Alexis Eymery hardcover‎
