This is an oversized hardback book small folio sized The book is in Fair condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The front cover is disbound. The textblock is intact though a bit loose. The leather spine of the book is lacking. The first several pages the book excluding the front endpaper have a horizontal tear to the middle of the page starting at the foredge. The remainder of the text pages appear to be in clean bright condition. This block book in a way is similar to a plat map in that it shows the shape and size of allotments for buildings / residences etc. In this case the measurement used to define the allotments is the Vara: "The vara a Spanish unit of distance was used in the Spanish and Mexican surveys and land grants in Texas. One vara equals approximately thirty-three and one-third inches; 5645.4 square varas equal one acre; 1900.8 varas equal one mile; and 1000000 square varas which is one labor equal approximately 177.1 acres. The word vara entered the Spanish language from vulgate Latin and originally meant a long thin clean branch of any tree or plant." from the Texas State Historical Society. This book also contains information about the owners of each allotment.
