The text in this tract was originally delivered as a sermon in Worcester Massachusetts in June 1854. Supported by reports from Southern ministers Higginson argues that despite slaveowners' claims of benevolence and the alleged civilizing moral influence of slavery upon the enslaved slaves in the United States in fact receive no sound religious instruction from their masters and exist in a state of "moral degredation" and are "the heathen of this Christian country.
