Hardcover. pictorial paper over boards n.d. 1884 12 pages. col. frontis. 12 p. of col. plates patterned endpapers Cover title: NIAGARA REVISITED;12 years after Their wedding journey by the Hoosac Tunnel route written by William Dean Howells Published by D. Dalziel Chicago. published by arrangement with James R. Osgood & Co.Publishers Boston Plates printed on both sides. Advertisements 16 p. bound in the end of the volume. BAL 9615; Wright American fiction v. III 1876-1900 no. 2824; Kirk Essays in literary history 1960. pp. 177-195. A rare book a fair speculation would state that there are 15 copies extant. Certainly one of the most rare of Howells works and one of the most rare of works on Niagara. This copy has a varient from the copy held by Columbia Univ.and other copies perused in that the Columbia copy and others bare the line "Reprinted with Alterations from the Atlantic Monthly May 1883" in place of the line in this copy stating " published by arrangement with James R. Osgood & Co.Publishers Boston." CONDITION: spine is chipped and separating with some loss overall cover soil edges worn lower edge of all text pages have one inch deep evidence of moisture at bottom edges pp 1 is separated front free endpaper and title page is misaligned not a serious flaweasily corrected traces of child's scribbles on endpapers whcih have been all but removed by non harmful erasure The edition was published by arrangement with Osgood but apparently D. Dalziel and the Fitchburg RR had an arrangemnt to share profits mutually. When Howells discovered that the Fitchburg RR had sullied his essay with sixteen pp of mostly railroad advertising but to add injury refused to pay he threatened to sue and this forced the company to destroy the issue. This copy and a few others survived the destruction thus a rare item. Size: 4 to. 23 cm. D.Dalziel Hardcover‎

‎New York: R. R. Bowker Company for the Newberry Library 1962. UNCOMMON First Printing of the 1962 Revised & Enlarged edition. Fine condition. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright clean and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. Fresh and crisp -- probably never read. This is the original 1962 R. R. Bowker Company edition bound in the publisher's gilt-stamped brown cloth. 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall. The type size of the Bowker edition is larger and easier to read than any other. This is still the premier Americana reference. Described here are 11620 uncommon and significant books relating to the United States. Moebs: "This is the best single volume work in the field of Americana bibliographies. It is an education of vast proportion. No Americana collector should be without a copy. It deserves daily reading." Tanselle Basic Collection #2. NOTE: This 1962 edition is still a necessary reference even though a new edition revised by William Hartley and entitled WRIGHT HOWES: THE FINAL EDITION OF USIANA was published in 1994. It added 125 new titles. Unfortunately it also deleted 50 books. Worse yet the 1994 edition's entries were completely renumbered. Because the 1962 edition of Howes was the standard reference for the previous three decades renumbering in the 1994 edition seriously complicates finding citations to the previous edition that are found in thousands of books dealer catalogues etc. First Printing 1962 Revised & Enlarged. Publisher's full green cloth gilt lettering on spine gilt border and publisher's medallion gilt on cover t.e.g. fore-edge deckle. Illustrated with tissue-protected engraved portrait frontispiece. Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard 1802 – 1886 was an American fur trader insurance underwriter and land speculator. Hubbard first arrived in Chicago on October 1 1818. He went on to build Chicago's first stockyard and help foment a land boom for Chicago in the East. On several trips throughout Illinois he became the adopted son of Chief Waba of the Kickapoo and married Watseka niece of Chief Tamin of the Kankakee Potawatomi. After he walked for 75 miles in a single night to warn the town of Danville of an impending raid by Indians he earned the nickname "Pa-pa-ma-ta-be" or "Swift-Walker."
