Landesman, Jay Irving
Rebel Without Applause; Escape From Victory: a memoir of the Fifties
London / New York: Bloomsbury / Self-published. First Edition Thus. Softcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 4to 11" - 13" tall. Signed by Author. A lot of two Jay Irving Landesman-penned items two scarce items indeed. The first is a SIGNED item inscribed warmly "To Liz with belated love and admiration JL signed." Near Fine condition hardcover copy of Landesman's memoir of growng up and becoming an adult in the 1950s and '60s. Hunter-green cloth over boards and festooned with silver stars to front cover silver lettering to spine. Fully intact illustrated dustjacket. Scarce in the trade in this state and edition being a First Edition First Printing exemplar. Several pages feature skinny unobtrusive penned marks in margins. 286 pp. The second item is unique in the trade there being no copy of Jay Irving Landesman's memories of life and loves in the Fifties in manuscript form. In addition it comes with extreme provenance and with added association value coming from the library of the noted influential erotophile and folklorist bibliographer and book scout Gershon Legman directly from his widow Judith Legman. This manuscript was it seems aimed at a larger more grandiose editing and commentary by Legman but who having given up read it but without much commentary. 385 pp. in typescript manuscript. Appears to be a photostat copy of the original manuscript but yet the copy on which Legman commented. On p. 68 the author has written "Armed with a bottle of whiskey we he and his wife caught the A train to the Bronx Zoo where we were to meet up with a literary tiger." When he arrived Gershon greeted him with "I'm Legman." Landesman then continues "The tone of the voice was sinister. As he stepped out of the shadows I saw a heavily-moustached portly figure with a wild shock of hair that made me think of a young Balzac." Legman's widow Judith confirms that "Jay met Gershon when he and Beverley were living at Hornaday Place. I believe Jay was the son of fairly wealthy antique dealers in Saint Louis and he had already started publishing Neurotica. From the third issue I believe it was Gershon who took over editing the magazine and improved it no end. But Jay paid him little or nothing. They continued to be 'friends' and Jay and Peaches and one or more of their sons came to visit us in the 1970s. At the time they were on a 'macrobiotic' kick and had to eat their own food which was weird." Legman's commentary on the manuscript appears to have been minimal either because it was so great or so poor. The eventual result was Rebel Without Applause published in 1987 which Legman dubbed in private says Judith "Rebel Without Applesauce." A scarce exemplar of a Fifties memoir and with extreme provenance and added association value. The Legman/Landesman relationship in print and privately is a fascinating back-story of conflict and collaboration. The memoirist wrote additional volumes of autobiography beyond Rebel Without Applause including Jaywalking 1993 and Tales of a Cultural Conduit 2006 and his other family members contributed to the genre too. All in two fnie memoirs one scarce the other unique.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes and for sets. Bloomsbury / Self-published paperback
