Mayer, Harold M; Richard C Wade
Chicago: Growth of a Metropolis
Chicago: University of Chicago Press. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. 1970. Second Printing. Hard Cover. 0226512738 . Second Impression 1970. Quarter bound in publisher's black cloth over ivory linen boards gilt lettering on spine and cover. Profusely illustrated with over 1000 photographs and 50 maps including four fold-out panoramic views of Chicago in 1858 1913 1937 and 1969. This is the story of Chicago and how it grew. In a little over a century it rose from a mere frontier outpost to become one of the great cities of the world. No single book can possibly encompass the immense scope of this development or convey the endless diversity of the life of Chicago's people. But with the help of the camera it is possible to capture many dimensions of this extraordinary story. This volume however which comprises over 1000 pictures and 50 maps tries to do more than show physical developmentit attempts to suggest how the city expanded and why it looks the way it does. Because it asks different questions this book differs markedly from other "pictorial histories" of American cities. Instead of emphasizing society and customs this volume deals with the physical conditions of life. In place of the conventional interest in "founding fathers" and leading families it is more concerned with street scenes and ordinary people. Without neglecting downtown it also reaches into the residential areas and neighborhood shopping centers. Moreover this volume is concerned with suburbs and "satellite" towns as well as the historic city. "Chicago: Growth of a Metropolis is an incredible book. Like its subject it is excessive and nothing succeeds like excess. It is handsomely designed with a thousand photographs that document the physical growth and the spatial patterns of the city. . . . A dimensionalism comes through that no other city has. Carl Sandburg sang it in his poetry and the book does more to grasp it . . . than any other book I have seen."Hugh Newell Jacobson New Republic . Spine and cover very lightly soiled interior unmarked clean square and bright. Slipcase lightly soiled and botton edge split else very good. A large heavy book 5 lbs. - additional shipping charges may apply. NEAR FINE. . B&W Photographs and Maps. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. ix 510 1 pp . University of Chicago Press hardcover

MAYFIELD, Thomas Jefferson, as related to Frank F Latta
Tailholt Tales
Santa Cruz California: Bear State Books 1976. Book. Illus. by Ben Barker Dust Jacket. Fine. Hardcover. First Thus. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Kern County Museum price sticker on the front free endpaper. xx 323 pages. Illustrations and black and white photos. Preface by Frank Latta followed by an additional title page "Tailholt Tales as related to Frank F. Latta by Thomas Jefferson Mayfield." This enlarged edition of Latta's "San Joaquin Primeval: Uncle Jeff's Story" 1928 includes an Index and recounts Mayfield's experiences living among the Choinumne Tribe of the Yokuts Indians of the central valley of California from 1850-1862 about ages 8 to 20. The book also includes Mayfield's experiences in the town of Tailholt a mining town established in 1856 during the Kern River gold rush. The town's name was changed to White River about 1870. From the dust jacket: "The story of Thomas Jefferson Mayfield better known as "Uncle Jeff" as told to Frank F. Latta. The book is made up of the recorded recollections of Uncle Jeff with corroborating letters and stories from others. All in all it provides a rich and detailed account of everyday life in the early settlements of the San Joaquin Valley and of the indigenous people. It is particularly noteworthy for its descriptions of his early years living with the Choinumne Tribe of the Yokuts people along the King's River in Tulare County. His later stories about life in the town of Tailholt and its environs are very engaging as are the letters from others verifying or elaborating on his recollections. The people and events recounted in the book represent a great cross section of pioneer life." Cover art by Joe Rodriguez. Dust jacket art Yokuts Harvest Mural is from a painting by the late Ben Barker of Susanville California and portrays the agrarian lifestyle of the Yokuts Indians in a huge oak forest that once covered hundreds of square miles of the San Joaquin Valley.
