Philadelphia: Lippincott's Press 1873. Hardcover. Near Fine -. 31 1 p.; 18 cm. Red cloth with gilt-stamped cover title: Bonds in the Bank. Gilt-stamped decoration on front board and mirror blind-stamped decoration on back board. Boards have bevelled edges. All page edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Pages 3-31 are printed on recto only. This booklet was probably given to the guests at the celebration of the 10th wedding anniversary of Mary Harris and Wistar Morris. The 10th anniversary is traditionally the tin anniversary which would be observed by a present of a tin bank containing railroad government or other bonds. Instead in this case it contained the poem written presumably by Wistar Morris to celebrate their anniversary as well as a shorter poem he had written 10 years earlier to welcome her to Green Hill Farm. Mary Harris Morris 1836-1924 was on the board of managers of the Orphan's Asylum of Philadelphia and the Howard Home for women discharged from prison; she also opened a school for girls in Tokyo in 1890. Wistar Morris 1815-1891 was a founder of Morris Tasker & Co. in Philadelphia a director of the Pennsylvania Railroad president of the Pennsylvania Hospital board a trustee of Haverford College and founder of the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle Pa. Their home Green Hill Farm was sold to Friends' Central School in 1925. Very scarce. In this dramatic address the newly-elected governor who'd been in office only three months lectures an often-uncooperative legislature: "You have been summoned together under circumstances of the most grave and important character." A strong Union man Morton sums up the righteousness of the Union cause noting that "The origin of this most wicked rebellion dates back more than thirty years.distinguished Southern Statesmen as early as 1829 cherished the dream of a vast Southern Slaveholding Confederacy. The determination was then formed to break our Republic into pieces. The first one seized upon by South Carolina was the tariff question." He concludes "I therefore recommend that one million of dollars be appropriated for the purchase of arms and munitions of war" among other things such as organizing a volunteer militia. The legislature failed to provide this funding by the way forcing Morton to borrow the one million dollars. Andrew Jackson's famed December 10 1832 address quelling the explosive tariff issue in South Carolina and curbing state's rights fills pages 9 through 25. First edition. Not in Sabin. Berry R. Bears a fine autograph addition from the influential and prolific editor Wiley 1906-80 for tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from him 8¼" X 10" Lexington KY 1955 March 24. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On letterhead of "The Southern Historical Association" which lists Wiley as president he chats at length with his friend about "500 reprints of Raoul S. Narroll's article 'Lincoln and the Sherman Peace Fiasco--Another Fable' from the November 1954 issue of The Journal of Southern History. I should like to distribute them to members of the Civil War Round Tables with a covering letter over my signature as president of the Southern Historical Association inviting recipients to become members of the Association." Wiley goes on about marketing this association. Signed boldly in full in black ink. Front pastedown bears unusual Viking exploration bookplate of Alan K. Dolliver. James I. Robertson Jr. calls Mosgrove "'A strange conglomerate of romanticism and realism' and possessed of 'some of the choicest stories ever to be written about the Civil War.'" NEVINS I 134.
