‎Ouvrage écrit par Filippo Mazzei, né en Toscane en 1730. Après des études de chirurgie, celui-ci partit pour Londres où il fit la connaissance de Benjamin Franklin et Thomas Adams, qui le convainquirent d"émigrer en Amérique. C"est ainsi qu"il partit pour la Virginie, avec son épouse et sa fille, et devint là-bas le voisin de Thomas Jefferson. Il organisa dans cette région, avec l"appui des grands propriétaires terriens, une coopérative agricole, et importa des techniques agricoles inconnues en Amérique. Bientôt, sous l"influence de son illustre voisin, il se tourna vers la politique, et publia plusieurs textes révolutionnaires. Ces écrits, dont l"un fut même traduit de l"italien en anglais par Jefferson lui-même, où l"on trouve nombre d"idées nouvelles à l"époque: illuminisme, idéal démocratique, égalité et liberté, contribuèrent grandement au succès de la révolution américaine. Jefferson puisera dans ces idées, notamment pour la Déclaration d"Indépendance.
