‎EDITION ORIGINALE de cet abécédaire d'artiste. Le livre est composé de la couverture, la page de titre et de 25 feuillets noirs ou blancs de tailles différentes, certains ajourés, formant par superposition ou juxtaposition les vingt-six lettres de l'alphabet. Tirage non précisé, celui-ci portant le tampon de l'artiste en titre et sur l'emboîtage. ------ Thomas Ockerse est né en Indes néerlandaises en 1940. Il s'installe avec sa famille en 1957 aux Etats-Unis où il étudie à l'université d'état d'Ohio, puis à Yale en 1965. Il devient en 1967 enseignant à l'Université d'Indiana, puis à la Rhode Island School of Design dont il dirige à partir de 1971 le département graphisme. Ockerse est à l'initiative du programme de Master of Fine Art du RISD jusqu'en 2004. En marge de son travail universitaire Ockerse développe des recherches personnelles, s'intéressant particulièrement à la poésie concrète. C'est en 1964, durant ses étude à Yale qu'il conçoit THE A-Z BOOK. En 1969, le MoMA souhaite le publier mais devant le coût et la difficulté de fabrication, le musée renonce. Françoise Boas qui dirige alors Color-craft Lithographers Inc. et qui avait fait le devis pour le Moma reprend le projet à son compte, prévoyant un tirage à 2000 exemplaires. Mais là encore le montage de l'ouvrage demandait un tel temps de travail que peu d'exemplaires furent assemblés. A la fermeture de l'imprimerie en 1974, l'artiste récupère les invendus, environs sept cents exemplaires dont un bon nombre endommagés, et il détruit les pages isolées. Il en vend alors lui-même un peu, revêtus du tampon Tom Ockerse editions. THE A-Z BOOK est à l'image des recherches artistiques de Tom Ockerse, et de sa participation à Fluxus. Elles sont stimulées par ses expériences de poésie visuelle, ce qu'il appelait «les équations des mots et des images». Bien qu'abécédaire, son livre s'inscrit par son jeu combinatoire de transformations typographique dans la lignée des livres d'artiste, exemple parfait du Concrete Book, terme Ockerse inventât pour son cours " Le Livre comme expérience nécessaire" à la RISD. Ce volume avait été imprimé à 1.600 exemplaires. Octave Uzanne dresse ici un historique anecdotier des bouquinistes de Paris, notamment ceux encore en activité ou qui l'ont été après la second Empire. Octave Uzanne aura retenu bien souvent des anecdotes graveleuses voire douteuses concernant bon nombre de ces hommes du livre, pour certains rudement traités. C'est le bouquiniste-bibliographe Antoine Laporte (maltraité plus qu'à son tour) qui répondra à ce livre par un pamphlet intitulé "Les bouquinistes et les quais de Paris tels qu'ils sont : Réfutation du pamphlet d'O. Uzanne." (Paris, chez tous les bouquinistes des Quais, 1893). Cette diffusion anecdotique à 25 exemplaires seulement pour l'Amérique était certainement destinée aux seuls "amis" d'Octave Uzanne. Dated August 14 1931 Plan No. 6719. An original railroad company manuscript map on onionskin paper with lettering in black the Kanawha River colored in blue N.Y.C. R.R. yellow C & O Ry. red and Rhinehart & Dennis green. A RARE map not found at OCLC or in online searches depicting the area of the Hawks Nest Tunnel disaster which has been called one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. "The Hawks Nest Tunnel was part of a hydroelectric project undertaken by Union Carbide near Gauley Bridge WV. Beginning in 1927 nearly 3000 men three-fourths of whom were Black endured prolonged exposure to silica dust-without respiratory protection-while mining sand-stone. Many of these workers developed silicosis and eventually died from the disease. Although the exact number of deaths caused by the disaster is unknown some sources say more than 1000 workers died. The 16240-ft-long tunnel served to divert water from the New River through Gauley Mountain a drop of 162 ft. Its sole purpose was to provide electricity only to the Electro Metallurgical Co. another Union Carbide subsidiary. Since the drill- ing of the tunnel was defined as a construction project and not technically mining the workers were deprived of any protective provisions for underground mining." In addition to the railroad lines the map shows the sites of Electro-Metalugical Co. loading and unloading tracks for Rhinehart & Dennis contractor for the Tunnel and the Dam Site for the New Kanawha Power Co. It wasn't until a NEWSWEEK article published Jan. 25 1936 that the American public learned of what had transpired years before. After an investigation in Congress the summary statement of the investigating committee concluded - "That the whole driving of the tunnel was begun continued and completed with grave and inhumane disregard of all consideration for the health lives and future of the employees. That as a result many workmen became infected with silicosis; that many have died of the disease and many not yet dead are doomed to die from the ravages of the disease as a result of their employment and the negligence of the employing contractor." ‎Album containing eleven 7"x 9" professional linen-backed photographs showing the process and results of installing new street lights along a main commercial thoroughfare in Hamilton Ohio. Hamilton is the county seat of Butler County about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. In the early twentieth century "the town was a heavy manufacturing center for vaults and safes machine tools cans for vegetables paper paper making machinery locomotives frogs and switches for railroads steam engines diesel engines foundry products printing presses and automobile parts" wiki. The photos show wide streets lined with businesses which with the advent of increased automobile traffic were undoubtedly eager for the most modern and effective methods of illumination. A wonderful set of facing night views shows how much brighter the new lights are. An additional 16 snapshots photos are laid into the album most showing people posing with what appear to be temporary streetlights. Five were taken in front of the office of the Electric Railway Equipment Co. of Cincinnati which may have supplied some of the equipment used to install the new lights. unknown books‎
