Large folding map is complete but torn unevenly from book leaving a triangular section attached. Map has 2 small holes at center crease and tears at some creases. A brief original report of Raynold's 1859 exploration of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers was published in 1860 with this main report delayed by the Civil War. His prefatory remarks allude to women in attendance and he recalls his experience of giving the examination to the first woman to apply to the North Carolina bar Tabitha Ann Holton admitted 1878. Edwin Godwin Reade 1812-1894 was an antebellum U.S. Congressman Confederate Senator president of the North Carolina convention on Reconstruction of 1865-66 and justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court 1868-1879. Born in 1835 in Dekalb County Georgia she was a writer and an ardent supporter of many Progress Era reforms. Her nemisis was the noted historian and educator Mildred Lewis Rutherford who was anti-sufferage even though she was ambitious herself and did'nt mind the spotlight of success shining on her. The wife of a powerful politican in Georgia; Mrs. Felton ran his campaigns. Mrs. Felton was a supporter of white supremacy and felt that lynching was a way to control the black male population. This copy of her autobiography has very old water stains to the last third of the pages at the top of the page margins. Tighly and securely bound in maroon buckram with gold lettering on the spine this copy has been rebound by the National Library Bindery some time early --the forties or fiflies. Some light spots on covers but no wear. No foxing or soiling. 299 pages First Edition. Table of Contents in back of book Picture of author frontis with title page. Nice sturdy well preserved copy at a fairly modest price. <br/> <br/> Index Printing Comapny hardcover
