The South Shore Line has reflected the triumphs and misfortunes of the Calumet Region throughout the twentieth century. For its first two decades it survived good times and bad until its landmark purchase by Samuel Insull's Midland Utilities in 1925. Insull launched an aggressive marketing campaign producing booklets movies and in particular a set of colorful artistic posters witch attracted many from Illinois to the sand dunes and steel mills of Northwest Indiana. One of 200 copies of which only 15 were bound. Wear to spine with slight loss. Please see photos. A presentable copy of a fragile book. The colophon references 200 copies printed in 1932 but according to the printer's note dated 1937 those laid unbound on a shelf for the previoius five years. Fifteen of those were then bound of which this is one. August Heckscher and his brother founded the Ashlar Press during their prep school days and had the privilege of a Rockwell Kent-designed pressmark showing an ashlar stone being hoisted into place. That's not utilized in this production. Upon entering Yale they abandoned the press and eventually donated the type and specimens and press to Yale. The Ashlar Press hardcover

Card Wrappers With Mission And Title And Author's Name On Front Cover Title Author And Publisher On Spine. Most Of First 48 Pages Were Neatly Broken Or Cut Off Near The Gutter Edge Then Re-Attached With Tape; Possibly They Were Bound In Incorrect Order And Then Re-Attached In Correct Order. In 1920 Clarence A. Black Sold The Covarrubias Adobe To John R. Southworth A Writer And Historian Who Had Lived In Mexico For 34 Years Before Moving To Santa Barbara Where He Opened An Antique And Curio Store In The Oreña Studios. Southworth Remodeled The Covarrubias By Cladding The Interior With Asbestos Wallboard And Redwood In A Gothic Style. Outside He Constructed A Wall Of Cement Around And Underneath The Old Walls Making A Cradle To Insure Its Survival For Another Hundred Years. Also In 1920 The Natural History Museum Was Under Pressure To Vacate Its Premises At 930 Anacapa Street So A Women'S Hotel The Margaret Baylor Inn Could Be Built. They Announced The Sale Of Their Adobe Building And Hundreds Of Old "Indian-Made" Roof Tiles. No Buyer Stepped Forward And The Native Daughters And The Native Sons Of The Golden West Advocated Demolishing The Old Adobe Which They Felt Had No Historic Significance. John Southworth Came To The Rescue Purchased The 1836 Malo Adobe And Laid Plans To Move It Next To The Covarrubias. "It Will Be The First Adobe In California To Be Moved Without Melting Away" He Said. By 1924 Its Resurrection Was Complete And It Rested Across From The Covarrubias Leaving A Charming Patio Between. For The Next 18 Years The Covarrubias And The Historic Adobe Were Alternately Leased In Whole Or Part By Southworth Who Periodically Lived There And Ran His Antique Business. Lessees Included Residents Who Ran A Tearoom Antique Dealers A Photographic Studio An Interior Decorating Business Shops And Art Gallery. In 1932 Mebane Beasley Opened A Vocal Studio At The Covarrubias. After A Recital The Reviewer Remarked "The Charm Of The Large Room Where The Recital Was Held Is Felt In Its Lighting Of Candles And Everywhere Are To Be Seen Delightful Old Paintings And Furniture While The Steinway Piano In Its Most Original Casing Is A Work Of Art." In Keeping With The Music Theme In 1935 Roger Clerbois A Founder Of The Community Arts Association Orchestra Leased The Covarrubias For His Mozart Society. In 1936 Southworth Tried To Rid Himself Of Both Adobes And Put Them Up For Auction. The Morning Press Report Was A Bit Wistful As It Stated "The Buildings Though Privately Owned Have Been Among The Principal Show Places Of Santa Barbara For Years And Have Been Regarded Almost In The Light Of Community Possessions." Back In 1931 The California State Chamber Of Commerce Had Marked Them As One Of 18 Points Of Historic Interest In Santa Barbara County. There Were No Takers At The Auction However And They Were Leased Out Again. Santa Barbarans Must Have Been Pleased When The New Business "Los Adobes" Advertised They Had Opened A Night Club With Dining Dancing And Cocktails. That August Eddie Valencia And His Beach Combers Entertained With Their Signature Big Band Sound Tinged With A Hawaiian Twang. Dancing Began At 8:30 Pm On A Newly Installed Dance Floor. In 1938 Southworth Was Finally Able To Sell The Adobes. Los Rancheros Visitadores Planned To Restore And Preserve Them As A Club Center Complete With Museum And Art Gallery. Leo Carrillo Direct Descendent Of The Pioneer Carrillo Family Became Head Of The Building Committee And Was Assisted By Architect Joseph Plunkett. They Replaced The Shingle Roof With Tile Restored The Adobe Walls While Adding Buttressing And Restored The Fountain In The Courtyard. They Named The Complex "Los Adobes De Rancheros" And Invited The Public To Visit. Donations Of Art And Other California Relics Provided Décor As Did A Unique Set Of Paintings Of The California Missions By California Artist Will Sparks. <br/> <br/> Orena Studios unknown

Remember the Maine! A Collection of Photographs and Ephemera Relating to the Sinking of the Battleship Maine in 1898
On February 15 1898 a mysterious explosion destroyed the battleship USS Maine while it was anchored in Havana Harbor killing 260 men and helping to propel the United States into war with Spain. Although the cause of the explosion was unclear American newspapers were quick to allege that the ship had been brought down by a Spanish bomb. Led by William Randolph Hearst in the New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer in the New York World the press demanded action. Hearst's headline "Remember the Maine!" became a rallying cry that helped turn American public opinion strongly in favor of war with Spain. By April President McKinley had given into to additional pressure from hawkish senators and his own vice-president Theodore Roosevelt and war was declared. Although brief the Spanish-American War had important consequences. It ended Spain's colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and secured the position of the United States as a Pacific power. "U.S. victory in the war produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba and to cede sovereignty over Guam Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the United States. The United States also annexed the independent state of Hawaii during the conflict. Thus the war enabled the United States to establish its predominance in the Caribbean region and to pursue its strategic and economic interests in Asia" Office of the Historian U.S. State Department.<br/><br/>This collection consists of approximately 120 items including original photographs printed and real photo postcards stereoviews commemorative programs patriotic covers postal stamps calling cards song sheets lithographs and other ephemera showing the Maine as she appeared before the disaster the wreckage and salvage efforts the funeral service and burials of the victims first at Cristobal Colon Cemetery in Havana later at Arlington National Cemetery and some of the myriad ways in which the Maine was memorialized and mythologized in American popular culture. Original photographs and real photo postcards capture the ship and crew prior to the disaster crowds of sailors lined up to pay their respects to the victims the coffins being transported the cemetery dotted with freshly dug graves elaborate floral wreaths and memorials and salvage efforts in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and in 1911 when the ship was raised before being towed out to sea to its final resting place at the bottom of the ocean. The wide reach of the patriotic feelings aroused by the disaster can be seen in two cabinet cards of young children wearing U.S.S. Maine hats as well as on items that have no military or national connection e.g. a high school commencement program a blotter advertising corsets yet bear images of the Maine or the "Remember the Maine" slogan. On envelopes and stationery we see images of Uncle Sam punching a Spainiard an eagle dubbed "the New Bird in Havana Harbor" and troops walking toward a ship under the heading "On to Cuba." A mendicant uses the Maine as his theme on a card handed out to solicit alms; a song by a writer of sensational crime broadsides is reported to have been "composed and written during the indecision of the U.S. Government" and urges "Let's show all foreign powers Aye the haughty sons of Spain they will brook no insult like the Sinking of the Maine." A particularly unusual item is an envelope illustrated with an image of the remains of the ship captioned "WHO DID IT" containing illustrated sheets of tissue with instructions to blow them up via a small "fuse" on the back. In all an illuminating collection that helps demonstrate the impact of both the incident and how it captured the popular imagination -- such that many Americans still recognize the "Remeber the Maine!" rallying cry today even if they no longer know what it represents. unknown books
