Vance Randolph 1890-1982 was best known for his studies of the folklore of the Ozarks but--somewhat ironically-- this pamphelt is dedicating to conveying the aspects of Davy Crockett's story did not belong to the realm of folklore. Most of the content is drawn from Crockett's autobiography with material on the last four months of his life taken from the 1836 book Randolph refers to as "Colonel Crockett's Texas Adventures" actually called "Col. Crockett's Exploits and Adventures in Texas" which he suggests was written by a journalist with first-hand knowledge of the facts. Haldeman-Julius Publications unknown books

Illustrated by specially drawn maps of the battle-field the monuments erected by the state of New Jersey and portraits of brigade and regimental commanders. !887 copyright page 1888 title page. In original blue cloth with gilt lettering. With the ownership signature of Civil War soldier Samuel H. Morris Cambridge City Ind. dated Mar. 20 1892. Morris has pasted to the front end papers a contemporary newspaper article with the obituary of General I. N. Stiles with his manuscript inscription first in pencil and then in ink -"I. N. Stiles was the adjt. of the 20th Ind. at organization. Gen. I.N. Stiles was a good friend to me when I was under Comandsic in N.C. in 1865. I and others sit by his head quarter camp fire many nights listening there to the storyssic and experencessic of the past." Morris has tipped to rear end papers a contemporary newspaper article about the 183rd Ohio. At several of the portrait illustrations Morris has added inked notations about the deaths of those individuals i.e. Colonel Percy Wyndham "Born Sept. 22 1833. Died Jan. 27 1879 by falling from a baloonsic". A Very Good copy light wear and soiling to boards. A fascinatingly personalized copy owned by one who lived the story. Dust jacket has mild wear to the top edge and a small nick in the front panel. Toulmin was a Unitarian minister who left England after facing harassment for his outspoken political and religious views. He met Thomas Jefferson and James Madison soon after arriving in the United States and with their help was appointed President of Transylvania University in Lexington. He resigned in 1796 to become Secretary of State of Kentucky and in 1804 Jefferson appointed him to a judgeship in the superior court of the Washington District of the Mississippi Territory. His reports on Virginia and Kentucky were written in 1793 and 1794 at the request of his Lancashire parishioners who wished to have a first hand account of various parts of America.
